Republicans Falling in Love with Baucus Bill

Arnold, Tommy Thompson, Bloomberg, Bill Frist. They're all embracing the Baucus Plan. And it's not difficult to ascertain why.

Of course the Baucus Plan calls for an unprecedented subsidy for the health insurance industry, and only a very weak public insurance plan. If I was a pro-corporate Republican with, perhaps, some financial skin in the game, I'd love the Baucus bill, too.

I'm actually shocked that more Republicans aren't cozying up to this thing. Then again, to paraphrase Jon Stewart from the other night: the Republicans hate President Obama more than they love anything else, including corporations, corporate welfare and their personal financial statements.

One possible upside (and I realize this may be a bit of a stretch) is that most people will simply take note that some prominent Republicans are coming out in favor of reform, and not be wonky enough to appreciate the subtleties that you've pointed out here, Bob.

If my understanding is not wrong, I think it's because 1) Repugs see the writing on the wall (reform will be passed) and 2) they're clinging to the most conservative plan available and that's the Baucus Bill. Am I right? The Baucus Bill is the one with the weakest public option, correct?

I believe I called this one. It was only a matter of time before the republicans figured out the political benefits of cozying up to this shitburger.

If they can get enough congressional republicans on board, they can simultaneously:
1) Further embolden the blue dogs
2) Claim that they're being "bipartisan."

Here's hoping that the republicans maintain their stubborn anti-reform-in-any-capacity-even-if-it-benefits-our-corporate-overlords....stance
