It's Looking Good

Just in:

Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Democratic leaders just emerged from a closed-door caucus meeting that included a personal appearance by President Obama confident the House will pass a sweeping health care reform bill today.

I can't get any of the live streams to play, and I'm not near a television. If you're watching, feel free to use this as a liveblog of the House proceedings.

UPDATE 6:29PM: I've been watching the proceedings on CSPAN for the last couple of hours. Virginia Foxx wasn't as crazy as I was hoping. But the cavalcade of shameless Republicans quoting Frank Luntz's ridiculous memo is hilarious. It's like watching a Daily Show repetition montage, but in slow motion. Speaker Pelosi is speaking now, so hopefully we'll get to the amendments soon.

UPDATE 9:18PM: Via Huffington Post:

Today we will pass the Affordable Health Care for America Act," Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said on the House floor Saturday evening. Politico is reporting that Democrats have at least the 218 votes needed to pass the bill. Four Democratic aides tell HuffPost the same thing.

If Mike Pence were capable of human emotion, he'd be really upset by this news.

UPDATE 10:27PM: The stupid Stupak Amendment passes. Shitty. The Republican Plan has failed with one Republican voting against it. On to the final bill...

UPDATE 11:10PM: The House bill has passed! 220-215. One Republican, Joseph Cao, voted for the bill.

I've been the House proceedings all morning (Im in LA) on CSPAN. Aside from a few minutes of totally pointless delay due to Republican's objecting to the fact that Democrats were talking, there haven't been too many fireworks. Iowas Steve King did spew so totally insane bullshit about how all Americans are already covered and how our system is the best at everything and there is essentially no need to fix it. What a dick....

Posted by: Ari Rutenberg [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 1:46 PM

I'm watching C-SPAN, too. Second warning to people in the gallery to basically STFU. GOPers trying to scare the crap out of everyone by saying that people will lose their jobs, illegal immigrants will pass around social security cards in order to get care, and that taxes will go up dramatically. it's pretty much SSDD

Posted by: ceu [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 2:28 PM

It sure is a sad sight to see so many adults in positions of power act like children.

Piss-poor role models to the nation.

Posted by: J M Ashby [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 2:34 PM

I dont think I can bare to read the comments over at Crooks and Liars anymore. They're just as fucking looney as the right-wing.

"the only acceptable progressive stance is to kill this bill and start over in the spring"

Yeah ok...

Posted by: J M Ashby [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 2:47 PM

The rethugs are acting like children, throwing their hissy fits. I cannot remember this type of behavior in the House (the people's house).

I have not seen folks shouting out "I object" while our represenatives are speaking.

Sucks.

Posted by: Jan [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 2:57 PM

Shaddagg uses a baby as a prop, telling us all what little Maddie does & doesn't want. (she doesn't want HCR) and Buyer started shouting then wouldn't shut up. And the GOPers don't seem to understand what "your time has expired" means.

Posted by: ceu [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 4:02 PM

I love them visual aids and props!

Posted by: Wolfe_Tone [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 4:19 PM

I was watching C-Span but I can't take it anymore.

Every single Republican that stands up says "government run healthcare oogabooga!"

VA = government run
Medicare = government run
"super awesome high risk pools" = government run

LOUD NOISES!

Posted by: J M Ashby [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 4:35 PM

Watching now on C-span. Right now Way and Means Committee is up right now. Rep. Patrick Tiberi, is spewing loud noises.

Posted by: Brian [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 4:49 PM

Ho. Lee. Shit!

How can anyone cast a vote for these silly, immature, lying psychos?

"Ho. Lee. Shit!

How can anyone cast a vote for these silly, immature, lying psychos?" by Hielo

amazing that we seem to have a sizable portion of the population that is batshit crazy and likes these morons

They should hope there is a lot of mental health care reform in this bill as they need it so badly.

Posted by: eve [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 6:30 PM

The house bill does infact cover Mental Healthcare.

Posted by: J M Ashby [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 6:37 PM

Quote from ceu: "And the GOPers don't seem to understand what "your time has expired" means."

Don't get ahead of yourself. This isn't what people want. They want single payer. So when the next elections come around, they won't view this as such a great thing by the Democrats. They'll view it as yet another compromise of their human rights by government and big business, and regard politics with same, justified, level of skepticism. So the Republicans can quite easily win. It depends on their financing, and whether they can market themselves effectively on some key bullshit issues, like personality, rhetoric, and so on. The same as any other election. Pass single payer and, sure, the Democrats would be in for life. But they won't.

Posted by: odoralwayscold [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 6:39 PM

Quote from eve: "amazing that we seem to have a sizable portion of the population that is batshit crazy and likes these morons"

They 'like' them because they provide an answer as to why their lives are miserable. Wages are in the toilet, and working hours through the moon. You can call them morons, but their grievances are justified. The left has merely failed to provide an alternative answer, because the left - the one that is allowed express its opinion - is, substantively, the same as the right.

For instance, unionization has been repressed continually by both Democrats and Republicans. If the left was interested in educating these people, they would encourage unionization in the morning, as it has proved to be a very effective democratizing force with the population. But the last thing either side want is people knowing what's really going on. Thus, unionization is demonized, or not even on the table.

Posted by: odoralwayscold [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 6:54 PM

We need a lot of change in many areas, odor. But the left and the right in this country are NOT the same.

Posted by: eve [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 7:00 PM

odoralwayscold: Don't get ahead of yourself.
huh? What you quoted from me referred to people continuing to speak more than a couple words AFTER the speaker has banged the gavel & said that time has expired.

Posted by: ceu [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 7:09 PM

Michelle Bachmann's voice makes me want to scream. And the whole lei thing? WTF?

Posted by: Kat [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 7:12 PM

And I read it somewhere else today, probably here, but this House "debate" really is nothing more than ads for 2010.

Posted by: Kat [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 7:14 PM

Kat, I was thinking the same thing about Michelle Bachman. WTF was she wearing and who gives a rats ass that two people came from Hawaii and gave her a fucking lei.

It is all exactly as I thought it would be. Like Bob would say...LOUD NOISES !!!!!

Posted by: Willpen [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 7:17 PM

Posted by: ceu [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 7:24 PM

Oohhhh...babies!

In other news, Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson has got style. That's quite a jacket.

Posted by: Kat [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 7:30 PM

Isn't it odd that everyone that stands up against this bill is overwhelmingly white.

Posted by: Willpen [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 7:30 PM

Another white dude from Louisiana....oh.. and a Dr too....pfffttttt...

Posted by: Willpen [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 7:31 PM

ceu, I'm sorry for misinterupting you.

Eve, if the left is the Democratic party (and notice I said "the left - the one that is allowed express its opinion"), and the likes of the New York Times, then it is on pretty much every issue. Poll after poll shows that both parties are massively to the right of the population on stuff like the wars, health care, unionization, the economy, international law, Israel, Iran, the state of democracy. Scholarship shows the same about mainstream leftist, intellectual opinion.

The differences are really minor, to the point where 85% of Americans, check the polls, believe that both parties are run by, and for, a few elite, private interests. Which is true.

Posted by: odoralwayscold [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 7:33 PM

Rep. Cole and I are looking at different polls, apparently.

Posted by: Kat [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 7:33 PM

What polls are Tom Cole reading???

Ladies and Gentleman, fellow Cescans, I salute you. Watching Republicans on CSpan is dedication to a degree I cannot manifest.

Instead, I've been watching Mike Rowe on Dirty Jobs all day.

So I thank you all for watching and commenting here, so I can keep my sanity and still know what's going on.

Cheers!

Posted by: Anne [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 8:08 PM

I feel like setting my hair on fire..... WTF is wrong with these people... this is NOT a debate on ABORTION !!!!!

Posted by: Willpen [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 8:09 PM

The Stupak Amendment is not acceptable. They aren't talking about not paying for abortions. They want NO federal help - subsidies or tax credits - for anyone who has a private policy that covers abortions. And, ladies & gents, I'd venture to guess that includes most of you with health insurance. Now might be a good time to contact your Congresscritter!

Posted by: ceu [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 8:10 PM

Willpen is right. When the fuck did this become a debate about abortion???

Posted by: Kat [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 8:10 PM

Tried Chris....my critter has already decided to vote against the entire bill. :(

I have emailed and called, I even know his chief of staff, to no avail. I am sad about this, however, he is much better than the previous guy. I will have to trust that others critters will vote properly. And cross fingers and toes that mine will be swayed.

Posted by: veralynn [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 8:13 PM

Vote down Stupak Amendment... !!! YES

Posted by: Willpen [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 8:13 PM

The slugs have been pushed back into the mud for now...

Posted by: Willpen [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 8:14 PM

@Odor: What people want single payer? The Left people? 'Cause I would bet money that the majority of this country has no clue what single payer is and that it was ever an option. The people didn't elect congressional Dems and the president thinking that they were going to get single payer. I think whatever people you are talking about shouldn't get ahead of THEMSELVES. Sorry, but there isn't and wasn't a large enough movement for single payer to justify your comment. Sure, it's been talked about for years, but for some reason(s)it's not something that the average American talks about at the kitchen table. I started following politics 2 years ago and heard nothing of single payer until less than a year ago. In addition, most Americans are for compromise. Forget the all or nothing attitude you see from the Left or the Right.

It probably sounded better in rehearsal.

And Boehner! He may know how to read English, but he sure as hell doesn't understand it! I can't see what's funny about figuring out best practices. Posted by: Willpen [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 10:00 PM

Okay, it appears that the first vote - the one coming up - will be on the Stupak Amendment, which will possibly gut the subsidies part of HCR. What it does, essentially, is not allow subsidies or tax credits to help lower income people pay for their premiums & co-pays if the insurance policies they have cover abortion. Many employer-offered policies do. It matters not if a person actually USES that benefit, only that their policy allows it.

Posted by: ceu [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 10:02 PM

Ceu - it also prevents insurance companies from participating in the exchange unless they strip their abortion coverage. You know, telling private companies how to run their business.

Kat, from TPM

Late Update: Rep. Tim Johnson (R-IL) was the sole Republican to vote against the Boehner bill. No one seem really clear as to what his reasoning was. As I noted below, Rep. Cao (R-LA) is the only member of the Republican caucus believed to be in play. And he voted for it, though in a high stakes case like this it would not be surprising to see him vote for both.

Posted by: Redmond [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 11:19 PM

As I said, final passage doesnt' have to be voted on by the Democrats who voted for Stupak's amendment. Now, it would take 60 votes by the Dems to kill the entire bill but, it wouldn't take 60 votes to strip out the Stupak amendment because the Republicans who voted for Stupak's amendment won't be voting yes on the final bill so, what you'll have is some 55 House members voting against the rest of the House Democrats and the Democratic Senators. Get it?

Posted by: Willpen [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 11:27 PM

What I'm saying to 'Veralynn is that the Republicans that voted for the Stupak amendment won't be voting yes on the final bills that get merged between the Senate and the House. If those 50 or so Blue Dogs or womb chasers vote against the final bill it won't matter because they're outnumbered. This is similar to what that douchebag Lieberman has said he'd do. Vote for the bill to get to the floor and then vote against it where only 51 votes will be required. Got it?

Posted by: roxsteady [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 11:27 PM

Jane, I asked a serious question, and as yet, have not received a serious response. If you believe I am against health care reform; if that was the reason for your statement, then you couldn't be more wrong, and there are a few people here who would vouch for me.

I'm glad the bill passed, but it isn't close to enough. I won't stop fighting until Single Payer is our way of life for healthcare. It's the only way reform can work. What we have now will end up hurting many people, and we'll be bailing out health insurers every year. I fear that this Public option will end up being a hurle to that, not a stepping stone.

We'll see.

From Pooper's blog:

"Things are really getting interesting with the healthcare reform debate. I’m a single-payer advocate, but I guess, with only a super-majority in the Senate and House, the Democrats thought that drafting legislation which reflects their core beliefs was just too risky."

Ha! Brilliant :)

Hey Poopster, I wasn't really reacting at all to your question to Bob tonight, nor doubting your commitment to health care reform.

It was more a general raspberry for your comments about the fucking Brown People sympathizers from the other night. Sorry, I should preface my insults rather than just hurl them. I really am just a bit lazy.

Posted by: jane [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 11:35 PM

f those 50 or so Blue Dogs or womb chasers vote against the final bill it won't matter because they're outnumbered.

No, they're not. If the final bill in the House has 40 Dems (the Blue Dogs you referenced) voting with the GOPers, the bill FAILS.

Posted by: ceu [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 11:39 PM

Ok Jane.

I apologize for issuing you the biggest challenge of your life when I told you to blow me. And, I'm not a brown people hater, just a terrorist hater. But I can't make a comment about a brown terrorist without being called a racist. It's pathetic. I've seen first hand what religious zealotry is capable of; I've seen first hand how predators slaughter the weak.

I was made to kill those predators, it's in my blood. I wont apologize for it, and i won't change. I hate terrorists and I don't care what color they are. I hate their reasons, and I hate their "logic". If it is their religion that drives them, then I hate that, too. If that's racism, so be it.

Posted by: Political Party Pooper [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 11:50 PM

Posted by: DocReason [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2009 11:54 PM

Shit, Pooper, hate away on the terrorists, especially the brown ones, if it makes you happy. All we "Osama-lovers" ask is that you try to refrain from prejudgment, as in the case of the Ft. Hood guy, who was actually raised Muslim (and Amerkin), before you worry that we aren't doing enough in the GSAVE or whatever clever name our military industrial marketing department has settled on lately. Did you read Mr. Brink's comment last night? It was quite eloquent. Hell, just take a page from Batshit Bachmann, and wait until you see the whites of their eyes before shooting (off your mouth), perhaps you will find that there is no enemy there after all.

PPP said:

Yeah, you saw it firsthand in the US military. I believe that's what you would call the "Christian Superiority Complex" you mocked Mr. Brink for bringing up.

I was made to kill those predators, it's in my blood. I wont apologize for it, and i won't change.

Ah, good ol' stubborn macho bravado. Where have I seen that before?

Posted by: Redmond [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 8, 2009 12:38 AM

To answer PPP's question even though I'm not Bob, the reason the Stupak amendment is a bad thing is because federal abortion funding is already illegal under the Hyde Amendment. The Stupak Amendment makes any insurance company that wants to become part of the exchange strip coverage for abortions from their plan, even though they are a private company. You know all the crap about Republicans whining that Democrats want to tell companies how to do business? Well, they're doing exactly that with this amendment.

So, if a woman "likes her health care and gets to keep it" but her insurance company wants to be part of the exchange to increase their customer base, they'd have to stop covering abortions, legal medical procedures. It may not be a problem for that particular woman, but it will certainly be an issue for many others.
