Super Stupid

This is just staggeringly dumb.

Sens. Conrad, Gregg, Evan Bayh (D-Ind.), Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Mark Warner (D-Va.), Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.), George Voinovich (R-Ohio) and Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) publicly vowed to vote against raising the debt ceiling if a budget reform commission bill doesn't come along with it.

Defaulting on our debt would make America go bye-bye.

And a budget reform commission would make Medicare and Social Security go bye-bye.

This is posturing for the sake of doofus voters who don't understand what's at stake here. Besides, if these conservadems were so concerned about spending, they'd be wrapping their flabby arms around the public option right now -- a program that, even weakened, will reduce the deficit by over $100 billion.

These clowns were complicit when Bush and the conservatives took a record surplus, turned it into record deficits and doubled the national debt in record time -- all at a time when the economy was growing and the federal funds rate was relatively high (with the federal funds rate at nearly zero percent -- monetary policy is no longer an available tool).

No credibility whatsoever. We'd all be better off if they'd do like George Constanza in that Seinfeld episode -- listen to their instincts and then do the opposite.

Not raising the ceiling is the same as defaulting? Is that true?

Our debt needs to be paid, and thus, our debt ceiling needs to be raised. However, I would also like to see them make an honest effort at cutting largesse.

They could start by getting rid of the "use it or lose it" mentality when it comes to spending money at the end of a budget cycle. Why not reward thrifty government servants for bringing their department in under budget? Surely giving bonuses would cost far less than the billions we piss away every year at the end of the year.

PPP, I seem to recall that very same idea espoused by Al Gore as Vice President when he appeared on Letterman ca. 1993; but we all know what happened to the Clinton agenda.

Note for Senate watchers: if you see Jeff Sessions' name on anything, assume the worst intentions.
