I just saw this, too. I have been with a Credit Union for about 15 years and have often wondered why everyone isn't.

Brilliant idea! I'm with a credit union as well.

LAH, it's so funny you said that. I just posted this to my facebook page with a note that we have our money and mortgage in our local credit union. When I see the manager at the supermarket, and I do frequently, he stops and says hi and talks to me. I think moving our collective money out of the big banks and supporting local banks is something we all can do to distill the anger.

I went to the moveyourmoney.info site to look at which institutions it would list in my area. No credit unions. Just one local bank (that has 6 branch offices in the area). I'm guessing credit unions are not included in the plan to keep money local.

Since I live in China, I have money in a Chinese bank. The government controls the hell out of these, so they function quite nicely.
Our politicians are so stupid. They could control the banks, too. Even write themselves a check now and then, and we would still be economically a lot safer.

I had to give up my credit union after they held a cash deposit for five days while checks bounced. I changed to a community bank, but it was bought out by a Spanish bank earlier this year. I can't win.
