Counting Invisible Calories

I'm kind of going Galt from the blog today. It's been a crappy week on the blogotubes and I'm really feeling it today.

Regardless, this caught my attention on the food reform front:

The authors of a new study said in a news release they measured 29 fast food and sit-down restaurant meals and found they averaged 18 percent more calories than stated. Ten frozen meals bought at grocery stores averaged 8 percent more calories than their labels said. [Lead author Susan B. Roberts] noted that an extra 5 percent in calories could lead to a 10-pound weight gain in a year for a typical person.

So on top of the misleading calorie listings (a single serving is how small?), we also have invisible calories to deal with. This is sort of like the Bush administration not counting the war supplementals as part of the deficit.

Bob, I'm thinking you need a little comfort food.

Now I'm sitting here imagining all my favorite comfort foods. Too cold for ice cream. But cold weather is a good night for frito pie. I haven't had chicken-fried steak in years. Yum -- with mashed potatoes and cream gravy. Or I could have some slightly healthier favorite food -- like grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup.

The list could go on and on.

Hope next week is better for you.

Well, why tell the truth and make money when you can lie and make slightly more money?

Macaroni and cheese, Bob. That always snaps me out of it. Or maybe a grilled cheese with tomato soup.

Of course, there's always beer.

I don't ever worry about calories. I run five miles every other day, plus, i eat two of everything, so they cancel each other's calories out.

Riiiiiiiiiiiight?

Bob, it bums me out that you are having a crappy week on the intertubes since you are one of the best parts of my intertubing. I wish I could send you my favorite comfort food, chile rellenos, to make you feel better. Wow. Just typing that made me want some... mmm... rellenos...

It might help if I had some idea of what "going Galt" was. Too bad Lee's not here to lecture me on it.

It doesn't surprise me to find that what we're being told is in our food doesn't actually match what's in our food. I don't suspect any sort of conspiracy, but just realize that any time people are involved in just about anything, whatever it is gets pretty fucked up by all involved. It might not be that they are trying to kill us but in fact that the people doing it are just fucking too stupid to do it right.

This really pisses me off! Its freaking hard enough trying to eat healthier, but now theres calories in stuff not being listed?

I give up
