More Like That One, Please

UPDATE 3: MSNBC will be re-airing the event tonight with a special report hosted by Matthews, Olbermann and Maddow.

I only caught about 20 minutes of it, but the president just wiped the floor with almost the entire Republican delegation at their retreat in Baltimore.

They're supposed to rerun the Q&A style debate between the top Republicans and the president on CSPAN tonight. Check your local listings.

And damn -- do this more often. Do it with the congressional Democrats, too. Very productive, and, of course, the president is very good at making with the talking.

UPDATE: Here's 20 minutes via CBS (h/t reader Sean):

UPDATE 2: Here's best part. The 66-minute Q&A session:

I never thought I could have an orgasm by watching C-SPAN, but this was one of the best things this President has done.

He needs to keep doing this. Every fucking time.

thanks for the heads up
I will pour some Chimay and savor every moment!!

I really hope the media covers this properly. He cleaned their clocks on FACTS. It really is amazing that they have not been cast as lying obstructionists by our media. In addition, how is eight years of Bush just completely forgotten in the debate. Amnesia is an understatement. It truly is jaw dropping--

I am not counting on it though--CNN's analysis with Villager Borger came across as the usual "both sides" are behaving badly BS. The bottom line is much of the Republican obstruction is based on lies--until the media covers the facts, the right wing will continue to win.

I was incredibly proud of Obama though. he is truly a phenomenal human being, if not a hardball politician.

I thought it was the best thing I've seen in politics in a long time. I wasn't quite orgasmic, though. Maybe it was Boehner's presence that prevented me from going that far.

@Jennifer- Boehner always has this "Mr. Orange Glow" about him. He kinda reminds me of the Great Pumpkin.

Posted by: DaBomb [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 29, 2010 3:48 PM

Doing this not only to the GOP but also to the Democrats will earn him a lot of brownie points with the general public.

Or so I would assume... Perhaps I shouldn't assume when it comes to the average voter. Afterall, the majorty of the people who voted for Scott Brown support a Public Option. I'm still grasping at straws trying to make sense of that revelation.

Posted by: J M Ashby [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 29, 2010 3:49 PM

Dunno how long this'll be up, but C-SPAN has a feed of the entire event: C-SPAN.org

Just started watching it, and... Yes, please. More of this--to both sides of the aisle.

Please post links to this once it is (hopefully) available on the inter-web-o-tubes.

DaBomb, I like to think of him as an Oompa Loompa.

J M, You're right about that. However, I don't know that any Dems would stand up and ask for it. After watching that today, I am POSITIVE that the Rs truly believe they contributed valuable ideas. They were mind-bogglingly defensive of pretty bad ideas. The obstructionist Dems, however, are probably smart enough to know they have just been playing politics and would know that they'd look like dumb-asses if they pulled what the Rs pulled today.

Obama really got ticked today. And he knew his stuff inside and out. I think Republicans just got a wake-up call that he is far better prepared than they are and he isn't playing games.

This just in--Faux News cut it off towards the end. Meaning...it was a homerun.

Now it's up to the "librul" NBC and "Stretch" to re-inject the lies into the the discussion. Boehner will be on MTP on Sunday. It would be great if the media would validate what Obama said--but they won't. Expect more fake balance.

Posted by: JG [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 29, 2010 3:57 PM

thanks for the clip!

I'm having trouble watching it on C-SPAN online.

Cannot wait for tonight. The cables will go nuts over it I think.

Posted by: eve [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 29, 2010 4:03 PM

I saw the whole thing.

In was in HEAVEN.

The GOP "whiners" (you called us bad names! LOL!) were pathetic.

The President was PERFECT.

Simply perfect!!!

Posted by: laddieluv [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 29, 2010 4:06 PM

It will be repeated on C-SPAN at 8PM EST tonight.

Posted by: DaBomb [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 29, 2010 4:10 PM

This was great and one of the Republicans admitted to Luke Russert off the record that it was a mistake to allow the cameras. I saw it live and the first 3 questions from reporters to Boehner after the event were just awful so I turned it off. That said, the whole thing is all over the interwebs and tv and the Republicans are being laughed at for the results. I just loved how he schooled them. This should be very interesting come Sunday morning on This Week where Arianna Huffington and Roger Ailes. Maybe Arianna will ask him why fox would cut away? I'm not holding out much hope that Walters will even be aware if it. This should also serve as a lesson to Democrats on how to handle the GOP and their duplicitous colleagues!

Posted by: roxsteady [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 29, 2010 4:17 PM

Hopefully, this is part of an overall messaging plan. If this is one and done--it won't move the neddle at all because of Fox and right wing talkers--in conjunction with the "librul" neltway villagers. The messaging must be daily.

Posted by: JG [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 29, 2010 4:24 PM

In fact, the conservadems should be very careful as well. It's already common knowledge that many of them have screwed up the healthcare bill along with Liberman. The President is likely painting them into a corner too. I'm also kind of sick of them all saying the President hasn't shown them the way forward. They are the legislative branch and they know what their options are. It's like they're afraid to make a decision.

They're not displaying the leadership required and many of them are up for reelection, not the President. They'd better get off their asses and legislate. Perhaps the President's demonstration and subsequent praise will motivate them.

Posted by: roxsteady [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 29, 2010 4:25 PM

One of the most fascinating looks into the machine I have ever saw. Obama was very good and didn't dodge any questions.

I watched the whole thing. I was really impressed. And I have to add, the Republican's were respectful and decent.

Posted by: Jay Kamins [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 29, 2010 4:35 PM

I am sure this will not change any minds on the far right. But there is a huge block of independents out there who are easily swayed and they are the ones who need to see this. Over and over. Every month.

It was a thing of beauty. The Bolshevik Revolution, indeed. God, it was great!

Posted by: LAH [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 29, 2010 4:54 PM

I think Marc Ambinder put it best-

“Accepting the invitation to speak at the House GOP retreat may turn out to be the smartest decision the White House has made in months,” writes the Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder. “Debating a law professor is kind of foolish — the Republican House Caucus has managed to turn Obama’s weakness — his penchant for nuance — into a strength. Plenty of Republicans asked good and probing questions, but Mike Pence, among others, found their arguments simply demolished by the president."

I don't agree with the "good and probing" questions though. The President had to wade through the prepared and rambling talking points before he could even get a question. He even had to cut off one of the last questions from that idiot Hensarling from TX.

It was foolish of them to even try to argue with a law professor, especially one as sharp as Obama is. It's like he went to their house and had sex with their wives. I loved it when he said he was "havin fun". I was too! Can anyone imagine McCain or Palin doing this in front of the Dems at their retreat? Me neither!

Spellcheck, please, everyone?

Posted by: suli [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 29, 2010 5:03 PM

@ suli - Contribute to the thread first and then make the request. Personally, I hate when people get so distracted by typos that they can't contribute anything more valuable than spell checking.

If I get my point across, then spelling and grammar be damned. I come to places like this when I only have a quick moment and am thinking faster than I type. I screw up all the time. I know it. I acknowledge it many times. But I try to contribute something better than a red pen marking up a quiz.

This was just an evisceration. R I wonder if this is part of his political strategy--to box Republicans into either (1) supporting more populist policy proposals, or (2) be exposed as the party that opposes fees on the biggest banks; that opposes regulation to keep the bank bailouts from happing again. Either way helps the President politically. Plus this stuff is great to pump up the base. I'm a little fired up.

Posted by: jdsne [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 29, 2010 5:22 PM

I watched all of it as it happened and like everyone else was thrilled but not surprised by his performance.
It should impress his critics on either side but it seemed already as soon as it ended that the complaint (CSPAN callers and interviewed R's) was that he was just lecturing them again "like he did Wednesday night."
I haven't read or heard any analysis but I wish it would be credible.

Posted by: JDS [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 29, 2010 5:23 PM

JDS and jdsne, I just watched Mike Pence on Matthews and it was sad. I guess we SHOULD give them time to review the tape and come up with a new game plan. Afterall, they were probably thrown for a loop. But every talking point was used against him despite Obama's brilliant play in saying that the harder you stand against me, the harder you make it to ever work with me. You write your own success or failure on this Rs.

@Jennifer - It's just not John Boehner. His wife Debbie also has that glow. They love them some tanning bed. Take it from someone who knows them personally lol.

and yes - this Q&A was totally teh awesome. Obama owned the GOP. We should have these on network television during primetime. That would be the best reality TV ever.

Posted by: IntoxiNation [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 29, 2010 5:31 PM

The Sunday shows should be doing the same--but they won't.

The reason why we lved it is because it was one big fat FACT CHECK on the GOP lies. Something the MSM should have been doing all along.

Posted by: JG [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 29, 2010 5:53 PM

@IntoxiNation,

First, my condolences to you for knowing them personally. I'm not sure how or why you do but you have my deepest sympathies.

Second, there are TWO Oompa Loompas!?!? Do they have orange children?

Third, I don't believe that's from a tanning bed. If so, then someone needs to change the lightbulbs because that's not the right color. That's just not tan. It looks more like cheap, off-brand tanning cream from the clearance section at the dollar store kind of fake to me.

OMFG. TennCare is the worst idea for public health coverage EVER and a perfect example of why a p.o. has to be federalized instead of going through states. That remark right about the 31-minute mark is pure, unadulterated NONSENSE.

Posted by: Matt Osborne [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 29, 2010 6:05 PM

Heard a pundit on MSNBC say (not exact quote):
"Everyone thought that the SOTU address would be the big news this week, but this is bigger." (talking to the repubs)

I think they are right!

Posted by: eve [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 29, 2010 6:09 PM

I just watched both videos and I think Obama was masterful. I thought their style of asking questions, was, yet again, political posturing. If anything, I think Obama was too nice--hence I will never be a politician :) For example when someone said, 'you've been ignoring our proposals for the last year', Obama pointed out in a round about way that they were read, understood and rejected. I would have flat out said, "A general statement of intention does not a proposal make. And furthermore, your proposals were complete bullshit. How could we take seriously the cornerstone of your proposal like tort reform, when it affects 1% of costs!?"

@Matt, I agree, I'm originally from TN. It's a wonder that state can wipe it's own bum, much less run a p.o.

Posted by: Irish Girl [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 29, 2010 6:24 PM

It's really annoying (although completely expected) that their only response is to whine that he's "lecturing". Well of course it was a lecture, along with the STOU, the majority of congress has been acting like obnoxious little children since he was elected! And just like spoiled brats their response to the lecture is to dismiss him.

Posted by: Alex00 [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 29, 2010 6:29 PM

wow-I have f-ing had it with our media.

Wolf Blitzer just drew a direct parallel betweem Rush/Sean and KO/Rachel. Unreal FAKE F-ING BALANCE.

I admit KO can go overboard--but even thne it doesn;t even come close to the viscisouness on the part of FOX + RW talk.

Posted by: JG [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 29, 2010 6:33 PM

I've been clicking from blog to blog and reading the various descriptions of Obama vs. The GOP and it is soooo much fun.

I cannot wait to watch this tonight.

Posted by: eve [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 29, 2010 6:34 PM

@Alex00-Anybody who uses the complaint,"He's lecturing us AHHH!" must have thought getting a 600 on the SAT's meant that the state thought they could spell clearly.
