During his appearance in Boston for Marth Coakley, President Obama said something that cut through a lot of the clutter we've been hearing over the past year. He noted that the Democrats have only had one year to fix eight years. The "eight years," by the way, is actually more like 30 years. 30 years of Reaganomics has recked all this havoc, and this president has been tasked with beating it back somehow.
I can't help but to think that Democrats are held to a much higher standard than Republicans -- by all political stripes.
Sorry, folks. The Democrats haven't rolled back 30 years of Reaganomics yet. In one year.
So we... turn to the Republicans? As if there's any chance in hell they'd do the job? The Democrats might be slow, awkward and disorganized, but that's no reason to vote against them. Yet for some reason, they're held to this higher standard. They haven't fixed everything yet and they're kinda spazzy and flakey, so destroy them and bring back the Republicans! I don't understand how that makes any sense.
Remember what's happening right now. We're trying to fix problems that were created during a generation of Republican, center-right dominance. Letting the Republicans back to the grown-up table won't fix a damn thing, and will only make things worse.
You want a quick upward swing in the economy, rather than a solid, deliberate recovery? Then prepare for more awful bubbles. Otherwise, have some patience and give the Democrats more time. Pulling the plug because they haven't pumped up a new bubble to give us all a false sense of security doesn't mean the Democrats need to be supplanted. Yes, some of them are corrupt, yes, some of them are insufferable, but consider the alternative -- and consider what returning the Republicans to power will mean.
The Republicans have all of the flaws of the Democrats, but the Republicans have additionally proven themselves to be backwards, unreasonable doofs, and they've been proven to be incapable of governing without forcing the nation and the world into economic and foreign policy chaos.
Frankly, anything or anyone that's in aid of the revival of the Republicans is a political enemy and must be treated as such.
