Lieberman's Anti-Citizen Bill is For Real

Greg Sargent:

First, it isn't just some paranoid liberal nightmare. It's actually moving forward. Lieberman is going to hold a presser tomorrow to introduce the bill, I'm told, along with Rep. Jason Altmire of Pennsylvania. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has already signaled he could support this.

Second, Lieberman's office has clarified to me how the law would work: It would empower the State Department to conclude -- on its own -- that Americans are conspiring with terror groups and should be stripped of their citizenship.

Schumer has fortunately backed off and won't support the bill. It's insane that he was considering it in the first place, but fine.

Anyway, I would put this legislation in the same category of awful as the Patriot Act or the Military Commissions Act. It's that fudging bad.

Now can you imagine if the car bomb had actually worked? At this point, I'm almost more fearful of the legislative reaction to a terrorist attack than the actual attack.
