Coburn Blocking Food Safety

The Republicans blocking something that will help people to not get sick? Shocker!

Majority Leader Harry Reid says the Senate will not take up food safety legislation before the Nov. 2 elections, citing a Republican senator's objections.

Reid and Majority Whip Richard J. Durbin have been trying to negotiate an agreement among senators for quick action on the bill.

But Oklahoma Republican Tom Coburn has raised a list of objections about the legislation, which would make a unanimous agreement impossible. The move stalls momentum for the bill that had been building with the recent recall of millions of potentially contaminated eggs.

And Coburn is a doctor, by the way. Sick people are good for business.

(With apologies to sane, rational doctors who don't want people to get sick from food poisoning.)
