Quote of the Day

“I have one dollar in my wallet. That’s more than the combined income tax liability of GE, ExxonMobil, Citibank, and the Bank of America. That means somebody is gaming the system.” Carl Gibson, the founder of US Uncut

More details here. And it reminds me, the most ridiculous lie in the Republican tax cut arsenal (and there are many) is that somehow the 35 percent tax rate is too high, and that bumping it back up closer to 40 is an atrocity. What the Republicans -- and rich people, for that matter -- don't tell you is that they never pay the marginal tax rate. They always pay a much lower effective tax rate -- rates that are lower than most of the rest of us pay. Why? Because they have a pile of loopholes to exploit. That and, yes, they're gaming the system, too.

If any rich person insists he or she is actually paying the 35 percent tax rate, they're either lying or they're really stupid, and they ought to summarily fire their accountants.
