George Will is an Insufferable Asshole

George Will on President Obama the other day:

Obama, a floundering naif who thinks ATMs aggravate unemployment, is bewildered by a national tragedy of shattered dreams, decaying workforce skills and forgone wealth creation.

Sullivan notes:

...this "floundering naif" has handled since arriving in the Oval Office: the worst recession since the 1930s, a mass revolt in the Arab world, a nuclear threat from Iran, two wars we had lost or were losing, a debt that, even if he had done nothing, would have been record-breaking, a global and domestic economy in the midst of tectonic changes.

Too many Republicans are only capable of seeing caricatures and simplified stereotypes. President Obama is young, thin and brainy. Hmm. So he must be a naive weakling. He's an unserious little boy, they think. Reality be damned -- it's conveniently overlooked that he presided over the deaths of Bin Laden and Qaddafi, while also passing groundbreaking legislation that will reform healthcare, banking, Wall Street and the economy as we know it, while also holding together a nation that's recovering from a cataclysmic recession. Yeah, he's such a child. I bet Very Serious McCain would have handled everything with laser precision and steady calm, right?

Anyone who doesn't understand what this president has achieved simply doesn't understand the tight spot in which America was trapped, the near-destruction that was overcome, and the effort that's required to roll back a full 30 years of Reaganomics. The last three years weren't just a blip on the economic, domestic or international EKG like the hostage crisis or the Dot-Com bubble burst. President Obama inherited a nation on the brink of a nightmare and he successfully pulled us back before it smashed into all of us. Yes, it will take a while to recover from a recession that deep, and we'll all endure the near impact, but it could have been worse -- much worse. And he managed to handle everything while also doing his best to make a case for liberalism during an era of unprecedented division and ideological animosity.

Floundering naif?

Fuck off.

My sentiments exactly. My local paper routinely carries George Will’s drivel. Insufferable. Pompous. Ass.

Anyone remember that Will used materials stolen from computers in Democratic campaign headquarters to coach George W. Bush before the debates back in 2000?

    • muselet

Actually, a briefing book was stolen from the Carter White House in 1980 and sent to the Reagan campaign; Will used it to coach Reagan for a debate (then went on TV to praise Reagan’s “thoroughbred performance”).

(In 2000, a Gore campaign advisor received a package of Bush campaign materials prior to the first debate; he turned the materials over to the FBI.)

And Will never disclosed to his readers at the time that he was coaching Reagan to debate Carter. In most newsrooms, that kind of indisclosed complicity with a candidate while pretending to be an objective analyst would get you fired. I’ve never heard anyone challenge Will on this clear breach of journalistic conduct.

  • mzmijewski

It defies logic why our local newspaper (Indianapolis) would stop carrying Thomas Friedmans’ editorials and keep this guy. Oh yeh, it is Indiana.

  • mrbrink

It shouldn’t be this easy to tell George Will to fuck off, but make it a double.

A vocabulary is no substitute for stupid.

  • GrafZeppelin127

“Conservatives” will see President Obama the way they want him to be seen, no matter what reality tells them. There is absolutely nothing that Obama could do or say that would dissuade them from looking at him, seeing him, and describing him as the cardboard caricature they desperately want and need to believe he is, and want and need others to believe he is. When reality doesn’t suit them, they manufacture their own. It’s that simple.

    • D_C_Wilson

Of course, there’s no reason for them to view Obama in anything other than a negative light. In their minds, Obama will never be the legitimately elected president of the United States of America.

This country is completely fucked because one of our two major parties only believes in democracy when they win.

  • D_C_Wilson

The right has been desperately trying to fit Obama into some kind of caricature from day one. Remember the Rev. Wright thing? That was them trying to squeeze Obama into the “angry black radical” mold, but his demeanor wouldn’t let them work that angle. Then he was “arrogant” for acting like he’d won the election after he had won the election. Of course, when he wasn’t being “arrogant” and “ramming” bills down their throats, he was “failing to lead” by not dictating to Congress the content of every bill.

So, Obama is a secret Muslim who is taking into reckless wars against Islamic nations while acting like a dictator who is failing to lead by bypassing Congress in order to impose atheism and Shariah law on America.

They don’t even care if their message is consistent. Only that Obama is always wrong.

    • Brutlyhonest

“The right has been desperately trying to fit Obama into some kind of caricature from day one.”

BINGO! And with media complicity, (yes, the horrid librul media) they keep hammering away at him. This, of course, is the same media that helps proliferate the Saint Raygun BS.

Here’s a question for the RWNJs: If you hates the smart elitists so much, why do you (a) talk about how smart george will is and (2) why would you believe anything this supposedly smart man says?

Also. Too. Will is on my list of people I’ll have to work might hard to not punch if I’m ever in arms reach.

  • http://twitter.com/ExtremeLiberal ExtremeLiberal (Jim)

Right on. George Will has been saying stupid and wrong shit for years, yet someone keeps paying him to do it.

  • JMAshby

    Fuck off.

    Well put.

  • muselet

Sweet merciful McGillicuddy, George Will is still flogging the “Obama blames ATMs for unemployment” line?
Media Matters debunked that lie ‘way back in June.

Will is either the laziest national columnist in history (“Let’s see, what emails have I been sent in the past six months? ‘President blames ATMs’? Perfect. I can bang this column out in five minutes.”) or he’s the most cynical (“Meh. The rubes won’t know the difference.”). If the Washington POS were still a real newspaper, Will would have been fired years—maybe decades—ago.

Yup. If Katherine Graham was still around, Georgy-boy would be so gone.

  • Obama_FTW

Will is a mouth-piece for Reaganomics/supply-side establishment. He has become a Rush Limbaugh for people who need the facade of objective economic analysis.

Ha, ha, that headline is the best laugh I’ve had all day. George ‘Eff’ Will still thinks Ronald Reagan was a great president despite the facts, and he makes up nonsense about global warming to fit his opinion. He’s Pat Buchanan with a bow tie and a baseball jones. Any opinion he has of the political opposition are about as worthwhile as David Koch’s opinions on socialism. I think George ‘Eff’ just hates Obama because he’s smarter. BTW, here are a couple of links on the ‘Great Naif’s’ achievements:
