Republican Nutrition

The House Republicans are stretching the boundaries of what can be considered "nutrition" for kids. They're rewriting USDA guidelines:

The spending bill also would allow tomato paste on pizzas to be counted as a vegetable, as it is now. The department’s proposed guidelines would have attempted to prevent that.

The changes had been requested by food companies that produce frozen pizzas, the salt industry and potato growers. Some conservatives in Congress have called the push for healthier foods an overreach, saying the government shouldn’t be telling children what to eat.

Yep. Children should eat junk until they're sick. You know, the pro-life position.

On that note, since when do the Republicans stop short of telling people what they can and can't do with their bodies -- especially when children are in the mix?

Also, it's worth noting that sick and overweight children is good business for the drug and healthcare industries.

Adding... Yes, I know already! Ashby wrote about this yesterday. I'm just weighing in since I often blog about food issues.
