The Worst Record of Any Congress…

..on the environment. Among other things.

According to ThinkProgress, our Tea Party congress has voted no less than 191 times to undermine environmental protection, garnering the distinction of having the worst record of any congress in history.

27 votes to block action to address climate change, including votes to overturn EPA’s scientific findings that climate change endangers human health and welfare; to block EPA from regulating carbon pollution from power plants, oil refineries, and vehicles; to prevent the United States from participating in international climate negotiations; and even to cut funding for basic climate science..

77 votes to undermine Clean Air Act protections, including votes to repeal the health-based standards that are the heart of the Clean Air Act and to block EPA regulation of toxic mercury and other harmful emissions from power plants, incinerators, industrial boilers, cement plants, and mining operations.

28 votes to undermine Clean Water Act protections, including votes to strip EPA of authority to set water quality standards and enforce limits on industrial discharges; to repeal EPA’s authority to stop mountaintop removal mining disposal; and to block EPA from protecting headwaters and wetlands that flow into navigable waters.

47 votes to weaken protection of public lands and coastal waters, including votes to curtail environmental review of offshore drilling; to halt reviews of public lands for possible wilderness designations; and to remove protections for salmon, wolves, and other species.

And there's still another year to go!

Both parties are the same, so the Pelosi House must have had an equally horrific record on the environment, right? No?

Now we get to the lowest point in the tea party republics gamesmanshit. By gaming the Keystone XL Pipeline on the public as a “jobs” creator, the tea party republics have entered a new phase in their total disregard for the lives of 99% of citizens in the quest for mega multinational oil company profits.

This pipeline has nothing to do with jobs. What it has to do with is extracting oil from tar sands in Canada. Since Canada doesn’t want the refineries in their backyard, the idea is to pipe it to Texas which has extra refining capacities and then export refined petroleum products around the world. Sounds like a great idea doesn’t it? Not when you realize that extracting oil from tar sands is the dirtiest form of oil. This is from wikipedia,

Making liquid fuels from oil sands requires energy for steam injection and refining. This process generates two to four times the amount of greenhouse gases per barrel of final product as the “production” of conventional oil.[3] If combustion of the final products is included, the so-called “Well to Wheels” approach, oil sands extraction, upgrade and use emits 10 to 45% more greenhouse gases than conventional crude.[4]

Isn’t this wonderful? Now ass hole tea party republic baby boomers can watch arctic ice disappear in their lifetimes while their children and grandchildren are pushed further into poverty by rapacious multinational oil companies.

As long as Congress has a loophole that affords them insider trading protection, I don’t trust either party to do the right thing. They must be held accountable. I think it’s plain as day that it doesn’t matter who the President is, nor his party. Black, white, GOP, Dem. It doesn’t matter. What matters are We the People.

    Shocking but not surprising.
