Birtherism is Still Alive

Alive and well.

A new Public Policy Polling (PPP) poll of self-identified Republicans in Mississippi and Alabama reveals that a plurality believe President Obama is a secret-Muslim.

As the Republican presidential candidates turn their sights on Mississippi and Alabama, where the next two contests are held, a new PPP poll finds that a plurality of Republicans in both states think President Obama is a Muslim. More than half of GOP voters in Mississippi said they held the incorrect view, while 45 percent of Alabama Republicans hold the view. Just 12 and 14 percent, respectively, correctly identified Obama as Christian.

Only 12 percent of those polled in Mississippi, and only 14 percent of those polled in Alabama, correctly identified President Obama as a Christian.

I still don't understand how you can simultaneously believe the president was indoctrinated for 20 years by Jeremiah Wright and that he's a secret-Muslim. That is unless you believe Wright was also a secret-Muslim.

We are not a post-racial country.

This reminds me of when about 10 years ago an unnamed Bush official told Ron Susskind that “we can just create our own reality.”

Once a large group of people decides to completely reject empirical reality, that’s when some scary shit starts to go down. Like the historical example of large groups of people making the willful choice to believe that “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion” is a real, documented plan by the Jews for world domination.

Ya know, this doesn’t surprise me in the least. My family is from Miss and we go waaaay back (and many still live there). Here’s a link to 2011 State Education Rankings for Math and Science (I don’t even want to think about how bad the other subjects are). Note that Miss is the ONLY dark blue state on the map. They are so far below average that they got their own color category….they’re #50.

No offense to your family, IrishGrrrl, but maybe that’s the truthful basis of that joke that Alabama keeps Mississippi around to make itself feel better. There are intelligent and progressive Mississippians, but most of them leave as soon as they’re able.

No, offense taken….believe me, I understand.

    Rationale doesn’t matter.

This is a tragic saga in our history. The right has been permitted to lie and lie and lie.

Watch Fox News sometime and you will be aghast at the alternate reality. It is quite disheartening what people are willing to do to unseat this President, or any Democrat because they believe the democratic party is godless and therefore illegitimate.

    It’s called “word substitution.”

If you replace the word “Muslim” with another word that starts with the letter after “M”, and is also made up of two separate vowels and double consonants you’ll get the word they really mean (there’s also the same amount of letters in each word).

Oh, you can totally ignore the word “secret” in the real word.

Nail on the head, Incredulous72. That’s really what it’s all about.

    • http://drangedinaz.wordpress.com/ IrishGrrrl

Okay, I don’t get it…what’s the other word?

      • incredulous72

I’m sorry Irish, that was the best!

I’ll give you a hint; it’s what many older southern white folks are very upset they can’t say anymore in public. ;-)

        • http://drangedinaz.wordpress.com/ IrishGrrrl

OMG I totally missed the part where you said, “the letter after M”. …I might have figured it out then. What do you expect? I went to K-7 in the South! ;)

Cognitive dissonance: two equal and opposite ideas that cannot both be true at the same time yet are held as true by the same mind. The solution is “rationalization”: the 20 years in Wright’s radical church were just a part of the EVIL SEEKRIT MUSLIN PLAN.

This is not the only incident of cognitive dissonance about the president’s religion. After the Beer Summit, many of the same ppl who called him a Muslim were complaining that he drank beer too much. And how can Mao on a Christmas tree ornament “prove” Obama is a socialist without the Christmas tree proving he’s not a SEEKRIT MUSLIN?

The answer is that none of this is SUPPOSED to make sense. It’s hypocrisy inventing justification, from beginning to end.

For them, it’s easier and more socially acceptable than admitting that, internally, you’re a flat-out, bug-eyed racist.

“I still don’t understand how you can simultaneously believe the president was indoctrinated for 20 years by Jeremiah Wright and that he’s a secret-Muslim. That is unless you believe Wright was also a secret-Muslim.”

It all makes sense once you realize that words don’t really have any definitions on planet wingnuttia.
