The Mitt Romney of 2012 is severely Republican, but the Mitt Romney of 2002? Not so much.
Romney now casts himself as a “severely conservative” Republican, but in 2002, when trying to distance himself from an unpopular Republican administration in Massachusetts. Romney said “the only connection” to the Republican Party was that “I'm registered as a Republican.”
His only connection to the Republican party is that he's registered as a Republican.
It's amazing how much things have changed.
