Texas Republicans Cheat Their Way to a Vote on Abortion; Then Lt. Gov. Declares Vote Too Late

In case you missed it, late last night the Texas Republicans held a vote on their sweeping anti-choice law — after the midnight adjournment deadline.

It was easily one of the most incredible and infuriating political events I’ve ever observed, possibly since the 2000 election recount mayhem. What appeared to be a huge victory for women and reproductive rights — culminating in a tense floor debate over points-of-order in Sen. Wendy Davis’ filibuster followed by 10 minutes of cheering by the gallery — rapidly descended into madness as the Republicans appeared to hold the vote two minutes too late.

But then, at around 4 a.m. EDT, the Lieutenant Governor reversed himself and declared the vote was too late. And so the filibuster was successful — but only after the Republicans showed their true colors as cheaters.

I know I shouldn’t be shocked by Republican cheating in broad daylight, but this was easily the most brazen example of it I’ve ever seen.
