Jeb Bush Comes Out Against Citizenship for “Anchor Babies”

Written by SK Ashby

Jeb Bush has downplayed the idea of amending the Constitution to end birthright citizenship, but during a radio interview yesterday Bush condemned so-called "anchor babies," a derogatory term for babies born from immigrant parents.

“If there’s abuse, if people are bringing — pregnant women are coming in to have babies simply because they can do it, then there ought to be greater enforcement. That’s (the) legitimate side of this. Better enforcement so that you don’t have these, you know, ‘anchor babies’, as they’re described, coming into the country.”

Short of amending the Constitution, it's not clear what Jeb's idea of "greater enforcement" is.

Is Jeb proposing that we single out pregnant women and deport them as quickly as possible before they can give birth? Is he saying we should deport pregnant women to countries that may not be safe for them or their children?

The idea that "anchor babies" are a problem in need of immediate attention, as if there's an epidemic of non-whiteness in America, is offensive.

The right wing would collectively shit themselves if pregnant immigrants chose to have an abortion, but they would have no qualms about throwing them out into the desert. We wouldn't another "useless eater" on our hands, would we?
