Congressional Republicans Tell Joint Chiefs to Oppose the President on Gitmo

A group of congressional horrible people led by the very smug Representative Mike Pompeo (R-KS) have addressed a letter to the Joint Chiefs of Staff telling them to consult their lawyers before they obey an order from the president of the United States.

“As the urgency of the threat presented by Islamic extremism grows, we cannot afford to have the commander-in-chief issue executive orders in direct contravention of laws that he enacted,” Pompeo said in a statement. “I encourage the Joint Chiefs of Staff carry out an exhaustive legal review before implementing any executive order transferring these dangerous terrorists to the United States.”

In no uncertain terms, these congressional sacks of shit are asking the Chiefs to revolt over an issue that is objectively political in nature. The claim that transferring prisoners to maximum security prisons would endanger national security any more than the existence of Guantanamo Bay already does cannot be substantiated.

It's not their place to decide whether or not to follow the president order to close the prison if he should give such an order.

If President Obama does issue an executive order to unilaterally close the prison, congressional Republicans may challenge the order in a court room, not the situation room.
