Bombs Mailed to Clintons, Obamas, CNN [Updating]

An explosive device of some description was mailed to billionaire donor and philanthropist -- and frequent target of right wing rhetoric -- George Soros, two days ago.

Another explosive device was mailed to the offices of Bill and Hillary Clinton yesterday.

A third explosive device was mailed to President Obama and a fourth device was mailed to CNN's headquarters in New York City this morning.

From the New York Times:

Explosive devices were sent to former President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, as well as to CNN’s offices in New York, sparking an intense investigation on Wednesday into whether a bomber is going after targets that have often been the subject of right-wing ire.

The three devices were similar to one found Monday at the home of George Soros, the billionaire philanthropist and liberal donor who has come under fierce criticism from conservatives and conspiracy theorists.

None of the devices harmed anyone. Law enforcement officials said they were investigating whether all the devices were sent by the same person or persons.

We don't know for sure if these attempted assassinations are all connected, but it seems likely that they are.

NBC's Pete Williams reported this morning that at least some of the packages have the same return address, but that address isn't being reported because it's fake; meaning the real bomber tried to implicate someone else.

There are reports of other offices receiving suspicious packages this morning, including the offices of Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), but reports are sketchy at best as of this writing.

Update... We now know that the bombs mailed to multiple offices over the past 24 hours listed the office of Rep. Debbie Wasserman Shultz (D-FL) as the return address. CNN reports that the package intercepted at her office was actually intended for former Attorney General Eric Holder, but the package was returned to the fake return address before it reached Holder.

Update 2... Another suspicious package similar to all the others was intercepted by Capitol Hill Police according to ABC News. The package was addressed to Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA).

The conservative movement has kept itself in a paranoid bunker mentality since the election of Barack Obama.

This kind of violence is being encouraged by the conservative movement and enabled by the GOP. This is what makes the “both sides” nonsense that our media insists on engaging so unacceptable.

Thank God no one was hurt.

Check out the updates, above! Seems like SOMEONE out there is trying to make a clean sweep of all the right’s bugbears… Unbelievable. This is America.

Hate speech has consequences. Donald Trump has A LOT to answer for, and the Khashoggi murder won’t be the end of it.

  • simpfan

Yeah, but Mitch McConnell had to leave a restaurant, so clearly both sides are the same.

      How prophetic..from Huffpost..
“Meghan McCain Compares Suspicious Packages Sent To Dems, CNN To GOP Restaurant Heckling
“The View” co-host Joy Behar asked where Mitch McConnell was amid Trump’s attacks on the press. McCain said: “He’s getting harassed and heckled when he goes out in public.”

George Soros, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and CNN. Sounds like a greatest hits medley from one of Donald Trump’s Nuremberg Rallies.

In other news this morning, the building housing the San Diego Union-Tribune was evacuated because of a stack of suspicious packages outside the front door. And the Florida office of Debbie Wasserman Schultz was evacuated “following reports of a potential bomb threat.”

Is it just me or does it seem like there’s an unusually large number of lone wolves out there, committing completely unrelated and uncoordinated bombing attempts?

I’m glad no one has been hurt, but I’m concerned that in this crazy climate it’s going to turn out to be a right winger posing as a left winger trying to implicate the right in a “false flag” type thing. Not that there aren’t enough crazy bastards on the right that are being encouraged to do something like this, I just think that the right wing is so crazy now they’ll go to any lengths before the midterms. If it really is someone on the left trying to influence the midterms, it would backfire spectacularly which is what the right is already saying. Bleh..what a world we live in…….

    • JMAshby

A right winger posing as a left winger to implicate the right? That doesn’t make any sense.

It certainly appears that all of the targets were Democrats or critics who’ve been attacked by Trump at one point or another, but it would be irresponsible to speculate about the identity of the perpetrator until we know more.

I don’t appreciate that you’re even floating the idea of a “false flag” here. If you do so again, you’re gone.

      • Username1016

I THINK you’re misinterpreting what katanahamon said? I think the speculation went as follows: (1) It looks like the work of a right-winger, given the targets; (2) but the right-wingers will probably try to spin it as a left-winger doing a false-flag operation aimed at implicating the right; (3) the right wing is so crazy that it MIGHT even be a right-winger POSING as such a left-winger, to try to fake a plausible false-flag story about the left. I don’t think s/he was implying that the left actually carries out any false-flag operations.

That said, I’ll go along with “let’s not speculate.” We’ll know soon enough. Yay FBI?

Thanks, yeah..I’m freaking out. I find the timing suspicious before the midterms, so my brain is in overdrive..!

If you knew my past comments, you’d know that’s not at all what I’m suggesting. My disqus profile is open, I suggest you look at my past comments. I’m sorry you didn’t understand my comment, it was a bit convoluted, but another pass at it and it might make sense. My general drift is that there are a plethora of crazies, on both sides, 1016 below seems to have understood my meaning. I’m a staunch liberal with post graduate training, I would never be suggesting or implying any truth in “false flag” type operations, just pointing out that there are crazies who will try to influence the midterms using any means available, even impersonating a “violent leftist.” I’ve exposed trolls here, even caught when regulars’ names are hijacked by trolls because I’m familiar with regular commenters’ use of grammar and their individual style. I’m glad you read the comments, it shows you are paying attention.’s another slightly different example of exactly what I’m talking about..from Daily Beast..

“Pro-Trump Media Insists Bomb Threats Against Clinton, Obama, CNN are ‘Pure BS,’ a ‘False Flag’
        Oh God.

I read all of the comments here, and yours (including this one) are increasingly unhinged. You may be a staunch liberal, and that’s great, but this comment reads like Trump wrote it. It’s a stream of consciousness. That makes you look suspicious. I’ve been doing this for nearly 10 years and, usually, if it looks like someone is yanking your chain, they are.

I am aware of what the right wing is saying about the attempted bombings; the same thing they always say. I am aware of what Daily Beast reporters are tweeting. I saw it hours ago.

If you’re “freaking out,” as you say, maybe you should take a minute. You may mean well, but making garbled comments about “false flags” during a time like this isn’t helpful. There’s enough misinformation floating around out there without creating any of our own.
