Chris Christie Vetoes Another Domestic Violence Bill

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has once again vetoed a bill that would keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers.

This is the second time Governor Christie has vetoed this legislation which, he unbelievably says, should be altered to hand out more guns.

Calling the measure "identical to legislation I conditionally vetoed last session," the Republican governor proposed a rewrite to the bill that would expedite the permit process for domestic abuse victims seeking access to guns for their own protection. [...]

Howard Moskowitz, an attorney for the advocacy group Ceasefire NJ, said the measure was "intended to close important but discrete loopholes in existing law."

The legislation Christie vetoed was very specific, forcing only those who've had a restraining order placed against them to forfeit their guns.

That doesn't seem like a gross encroachment of big government to me, but I'm not Chris Christie and I'm not angling to be Donald Trump's running mate.

It was surprisingly hard to find the actual bill in question here. S180 turns out to be about 3 paragraphs long and, if I’m reading it right, does nothing but amend the current laws to include domestic partners under the header of “victims” who are entitled to special protections under existent gun laws. Anyone have a different read?

Christie also said the vetoed bill “contains redundant restrictions on firearms ownership while ignoring the larger problem of domestic violence, which in most cases does not involve a firearm.”

Plastic Man would struggle with a stretch like that.

  • Because domestic abusers NEVER overpower their victims and use their own guns against them! That could NEVER happen!
