Unhinged History: Colorado Critics Face Recall Elections

Last year, as Advanced Placement U.S. History Hysteria gripped the wingnutosphere, a group of school board members in the Denver, Colorado area proposed making changes to school curriculum to remove the "anti-American" AP history standards.

Their proposal was universally condemned by parents, teachers, and even students who protested against the idea.

Those members of the school board who sought to censor the curriculum are now facing recalls.

GOLDEN — Organizers in Jefferson County on Tuesday turned in more than double the signatures needed on petitions to order a recall election on three school board members in the second-largest school district in the state. [...]

The three board members are being criticized for many of the changes they've implemented since they were elected in November 2013, including their highly publicized attempts to censor U.S. history classes, violating open meeting laws and claims the board "wasted millions of taxpayer dollars," on legal expenses and on a high salary for the new superintendent.

Petitioners were required to collect at least 15,000 signatures for each member of the board, but they were able to acquire as many as 37,000 signatures each.

The contingent of self-styled patriots who believe we should censor negative events in our history to create a more rosy picture of America are going to shit their pants.

Never forget:

CARSON: A whole section on slavery and how evil we are. A whole section on Japanese internment camps and how we slaughtered millions of Japanese with our bombs. A whole section on how we wiped out American Indians with no mercy.

I mean I think most people, when they finished that course, they'd be ready to go sign up for ISIS. This is what we're doing to the young people in our nation. And we have got to stop this silliness.

Go ask George Takei how “silly” that Japanese Internment episode in our history was.
But, of course, I suppose that would seem “silly” to someone who thinks the worst most immoral ‘ting’ that has happened in our history is that Gays can now get married.

  • Draxiar

Yes. And it also needs a whole section on how we enslaved a race of people for our economic benefit. If that doesn’t hit close to home for Ben Carson then he’s hopeless.

  • Christopher Foxx

And we have got to stop this silliness.

    Yes, Dr Carson. You do.

I love it how Ben Carson so habitually tells people “I’m not PC.” What could more PC than this kind of nonsense? The idea that we should cleanse our history lessons of anything that makes conservatives feel oogy. It’s the definition of political correctness. What a clown.

As has been pointed out countless times, APUSH is for high school students wanting to take college-level US History. The ZOMG! We gots to protect the chilluns! reaction is ludicrous (and yes, that does mean Ben Carson is ridiculous).

I’ll go out on a limb and suggest the three targeted board members will paint themselves as the victims of a “politcially correct” conspiracy by “liberal activists” who want to tear down Murca. I’ll also suggest they’ll never even hint at addressing the specific complaints leveled against them.

It will be interesting to see how the recall turns out.

      Total recall, hopefully.

    • Christopher Foxx

I’ll also suggest they’ll never even hint at addressing the specific complaints leveled against them.

      No bet.

      • muselet

        Good call.

Shorter Ben Carson- “You want the truth? You can’t handle the truth.”

    • Nefercat

Or, Ben Carson: “You want the truth? Tough, because I can’t handle the truth.”
