In other news, we now know why Volkswagen made the decision to cheat on emissions testing. They reportedly did it to save themselves money on an engine that didn't live up to the hype.

Rather than stop production of the engine and throw out years of work and investment, managers decided to cheat, the people said, confirming a report in Bild am Sonntag, a German newspaper. They did not want to be identified because of the sensitivity of the issue. [...]

It remained unclear who made the decision to solve the emissions problem by installing software deliberately devised to cheat on emissions tests.

I refuse to believe anyone below the highest levels of the company would have the responsibility and authority to make this call. I don't buy that some patsy middle-managers are responsible.

Meanwhile, more details of the Oregon community college shooter have become available. Not surprisingly, the young man was not just an aspiring wingnut who held white supremacist views. He also had a lot to say about the women who refused to sleep with him according to law enforcement sources.

Detailed descriptions of how the shooting itself transpired are horrific.

Harper-Mercer's victims ranged in age from 18 to 67. Sarena Moore, 44, who was in a wheelchair, was shot to death after she got to the floor and Harper-Mercer ordered her to get back into her chair.

"She got off the chair, she went on the ground, and then he told her to get back on the chair," Heu said. "And then she tried to climb back on the chair, and then he shot her."

You probably guessed, but the stories about Mercer specifically targeting Christians were wrong. Mercer did ask each victim their religious affiliation, but according to survivors he shot each victim regardless of how they answered the question.

Finally, New Mexico's Republican Secretary of State has been indicted on 65(!) charges of fraud and embezzlement.
