Former GOP Rep. Steve Stockman Indicted for Stealing From Charities

Remember Steve Stockman? He used to be the most batshit members of Congress, but now he's facing possible prison time.

Stockman and one of his aides have been indicted by a federal grand jury on 28 counts of fraud and conspiracy.

Former U.S. Rep. Steve Stockman and a former congressional aide were indicted Tuesday by a federal grand jury on charges they stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from charitable foundations to fund campaigns and pay personal expenses.

Stockman, 60, and his former director of special projects, Jason Posey, 46, were charged with 28 criminal counts, including mail and wire fraud, conspiracy, making false statements to the Federal Election Commission, making excessive campaign contributions and money laundering. [...]

Thomas Dodd, a former special assistant in Stockman's congressional office, pleaded guilty to his involvement in the scheme last week.

The most surprising part of this story may be what they spent the money on, or rather what they didn't spend money on.

You may recall that Stockman's disgusting campaign offices, if you could even call it that, were condemned. Stockman allegedly raised over $1.2 million "under false pretenses" and diverted over $285,000 in donations meant for charitable organizations to cover personal expenses according to federal prosecutors, but he apparently couldn't afford a real office.

Stockman's associates are also accused of raising hundreds of thousands of dollars under false pretenses to fund attack ads and their campaign.

Stockman was arrested several weeks ago after attempting to board a plane to leave the country.
