Hell Freezes Over, Oversight Committee Does Job

Written by SK Ashby

Saying the Republican-controlled House Oversight Committee is doing its job may be a small step too far, but I'll go with it for now.

Ranking Republicans and Democrats on the committee have referred Kellyanne Conway to the Office of Government Ethics for review for promoting Ivanka Trump's brand on Fox News.

Rep. Jason Chaffetz, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, and Rep. Elijah Cummings, ranking member of the same committee, have asked the OGE to review Conway’s comments and any potential ethics violations.

In their Thursday letter to Walter Shaub, the director of the OGE, Chaffetz and Cummings asked for a review of Conway's comments, as well as “appropriate disciplinary action (such as reprimand, suspension, demotion or dismissal) be brought against the office or employee.”

While I would call this good news, I also see it as Jason Chaffetz passing the buck to someone else when he could review the matter himself. Furthermore, the OGE's assessment is non-binding, meaning Chaffetz will have another chance to show that nothing matters when the results of their review are returned to him.

Chaffetz was blasted at a town hall meeting last night where constituents yelled at him to hold Trump accountable or, at the very least, hold him to the same standard he held Hillary Clinton.
