President Obama

I Agree with President Obama on This Obama Mistake

President Obama yesterday on his biggest first term mistake:

When I think about what we’ve done well and what we haven’t done well. The mistake of my first term – couple of years – was thinking that this job was just about getting the policy right. And that’s important. But the nature of this office is also to tell a story to the American people that gives them a sense of unity and purpose and optimism, especially during tough times.

Yeah, the president and the Democrats collectively move in the correct direction. They just can't sell it. It's frustrating to watch because the truth and reality is on their side and it should be a no-brainer to pitch. And yet, it just simply doesn't break through.

OK, the messaging was a mistake. Maybe even the biggest mistake. But right up there with the messaging has to be Obama’s continuing atterpts to make nice-nice with certain Republicans long after it had become apparent to every other sentient human beings that these guys were never going to cooperate with him.

But Bob, haven’t you realized by now? Reality and truth have a liberal bias.

There is a story—possibly apocryphal and which I can’t find at the moment—about Lyndon Johnson stomping around the Oval Office, demanding to know if anyone knew any one-armed experts (different tellings of the tale have Johnson wanting one-armed economists or scientists). One brave staffer finally inquired why, to which Johnson replied that all the experts kept saying “on one hand this but on the other hand that“, and he wanted some experts with only one hand.

Reality is almost always more complex than fantasy, and truth is almost always more complicated than half-truth. That makes reality and truth harder to sell, and most of the one-armed experts work for the Rs.

Mix in some “Corporate Owned Media” with that “Complex Reality” and you begin to see why the progressive message never gets a fair airing.

That, Sir, is what we call a “no shitter”!

The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem.

    Messaging has been excellent recently.
