Is Another Government Shutdown Coming This Week?

Written by SK Ashby

We've seen this coming from miles away, but the congressional conference committee on border security funding has not reached an agreement to increase funding.

In fact, it appears that congressional Democrats want to cut funding in some cases, not increase it.

[Talks] collapsed over Democratic demands to limit the number of migrants authorities can detain, and the two sides remained separated over how much to spend on President Donald Trump’s promised border wall. A Friday midnight deadline is looming to prevent a second partial government shutdown. [...]

Democrats say they proposed their cap to force ICE to concentrate its internal enforcement efforts on dangerous immigrants, not those who lack legal authority to be in the country but are productive and otherwise pose no threat. Democrats have proposed reducing the current number of beds ICE uses to detain immigrants here illegally from 40,520 to 35,520.

Trump hate-tweeted Democrats on Twitter this morning and called this a "brand new demand" and he's not necessarily wrong. And it's a good demand.

I personally believe the number of beds ICE can use to detain immigrants should be even lower than Democrats are demanding, but this is a sign that Democrats are trying to gain ground on Trump, not just hold the line against funding for his fantasy border wall.

I feel justifiably skeptical that the congressional conference committee will reach an agreement today (or any day) and the next question is whether this will lead to another government shutdown.

To avoid another shutdown, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will have to hold a vote on a clean funding bill passed by House Democrats and he was not willing to do that without Trump's blessing during the last government shutdown.

Trump already caved once. Does he really want to shut down the government so he can eventually cave again?
