“It’s a great talking point”

We've always known the Republican party's concerns about the federal deficit and debt are mostly bullshit. Only a small handful of Republicans truly care if their policies increase the federal deficit and, among those who do, an even smaller number are willing to buck their own party when it comes time to vote.

But we're diabolical liberals. Why should anyone listen to us?

You don't have to. Just listen to Representative Mark Walker (R-NC):

A new tax cut is emerging to rival those of the Bush years, and the deficit hawks have hardly peeped.

“It’s a great talking point when you have an administration that’s Democrat-led,” said Representative Mark Walker, Republican of North Carolina and the chairman of the Republican Study Committee, a group of about 150 conservative House members. “It’s a little different now that Republicans have both houses and the administration.”

Oh.

You know what would be great? If our “liberal” media would remember this quote the next time there’s a Democratic president and/or Congress and all Republicans scream bloody murder about TEH DEFICIT IS IMMORAL AND WILL KILL US ALL.

We all know this will never happen. It would hurt conservatives’ feelings. There aren’t many norms left in politics, but that one will never, ever be broken.

So he’s basically admitting that Republicans run up the debt and when Democrats gain power and raise taxes to pay for it they can blame Democrats for being “tax and spend”. I suppose one can admire his honesty in deception.

  • Party above country. No way you can interpret this as anything but traitorous.

It’s rare for a politician to let the cat out of the bag as unambiguously as Mark Walker did.

I expect he’s in for a severe talking-to about his inconvenient honesty.

Actually, Republicans have done it a number of times. ANd, as it has never cost them anything, I expect they’ll continue to pay no penalty for it.
