Mexican President Cancels State Visit Over Trump’s Border Wall Fantasy

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto was scheduled to visit Washington in the near future but the state visit has reportedly been canceled.

The Washington Post reported over the weekend that Nieto canceled the visit after a recent phone call with Trump in which Trump continued to rant about his fantasy border wall.

Speaking by phone on Tuesday, Peña Nieto and Trump devoted a considerable portion of their roughly 50 minute conversation to the wall, and neither man would compromise his position.

One Mexican official said Trump “lost his temper.” But U.S. officials described him instead as being frustrated and exasperated, saying Trump believed it was unreasonable for Peña Nieto to expect him to back off his crowd-pleasing campaign promise of forcing Mexico to pay for the wall.

You know, Trump had a chance to get his fantasy wall. All he had to do was agree to support a bill to codify the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and he could have had it. DACA may yet survive in court without President Deals getting anything at all for it.

But that's not the only reason Trump's demand is absurd. He has repeatedly called on Congress to fund his wall. Why is he still saying Mexico should pay for it if he has already asked Congress to pay for it in his budget proposal?

The answer is clear: Trump thinks everyone in the world is just as stupid as he is.

I don't expect the average person gives two shit if the Mexican president has canceled his visit, but Trump's destructive relationship with him could make it even more likely that he'll unilaterally withdraw from the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Every time Trump 'loses his temper' during phone calls with the Mexican president makes it less likely Nieto will support controversial changes to NAFTA favored by Trump's advisers and trade representative.

Trump think he's playing hard ball but all he's really doing is giving the world more reasons to tell us to fuck off.

    America, Home of the Stupid.
Mexico, having seen the idiotic show that trump has put on for a year now, has already started to shift its trading deals elsewhere. When he does try to retaliate through trade or tariffs, it will hurt the US economy far more than anyone else.
And in actual fact, even if he does not follow through on his threats, the mere fact of having made them has made the US an unreliable trading partner. And the GOP now owns this.

  • The President is not allowed to lose his temper when talking to foreign heads of state /government. After a Pearl Harbor kind of incident it’s allowed, Cordell Hull very nearly did. Otherwise, no.

Was this kind of behavior actually successful for Donald Trump when he was a real-estate developer?

That says more about the people he dealt with than it does about him.

    • Apparently it was, at least a little. Real estate is so slimy he might not have been the worst in that world.

“Trump believed it was unreasonable for Peña Nieto to expect him to back off his crowd-pleasing campaign promise of forcing Mexico to pay for the wall”
This is proof of what a narcissistic sociopath trump is. WTF do his moronic campaign promises have to do with Mexico? If he had promised each of his male supporters the first-born daughter of a libtard to do with as they pleased, he would likely be indignant at said libtards making him look bad by refusing to go along.

The situation would be different if the wall had been something that trump had discussed with Mexican leaders, if there had been a tentative proposal in place, etc., if it truly were a back and forth negotiation between peers.

But trump did not consult Mexico in any way. He just yapped away to his drooling, yowling, pig-ignorant base that he would build a wall and make Mexico pay for it and. he. can’t. grasp. at. all. that Mexico is a different entity with thoughts, dreams, plans, and rights of its own which have absolutely nothing to do with trump. He can’t grasp this because trump is the only entity that is real to trump and the only entity that matters to trump. This is a grossly damaged psyche and we are all paying the price.

Trump is completely incapable of seeing the other party’s point of view. Pena Nieto can’t possibly agree to fund the stupid wall! He’d be courting torches and pitchforks from his countrymen — it’s THEIR tax money and THEIR dignity that would be sacrificed — even lip service agreement would be political suicide. But Trump sees only Trump.

“Why won’t these brown people do as I tell them?”

Bottom line, it’s not in Mexico’s best interests. What possible reason could Pena Nieto even HAVE to agree to this nonsense? “Avoiding having Trump shout at him” is a pretty weak one.
