In other news, federal regulators have announced charges and penalties for 10 former executives and managers from Wells Fargo stemming from the bank's practice of opening fake accounts in the names of their customers without asking or telling them.

Meanwhile, German Chancellor Angela Merkel says dealing with climate change and setting up the EU's $1 trillion investment fund is a matter of survival for Europe and the rest of the planet.

“These are obviously transformations of a gigantic historical scale,” Merkel said. “These transformations basically mean that in the next thirty years we have to leave behind the entire way of business and life that we got used to during the industrial age.”

Finally, and in related news, the Chinese government has declared war on single-use plastics.

The National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, which issued the new policy, said plastic bags will be banned in all of China's major cities by the end of 2020 and banned in all cities and towns in 2022. Markets selling fresh produce will be exempt from the ban until 2025.

Other items such as plastic utensils from takeaway food outlets and plastic courier packages will also be phased out. [...]

China also banned the import of all plastic waste, and the use of medical plastic waste in the production of plastic.

The production and sale of plastic bags less than 0.025mm thick will be banned, as will plastic film less than 0.01mm thick for agricultural use.

Meanwhile, here in America, Republicans would completely lose their shit if a Democratic administration tried to do this. The Supreme Court would probably strike it down. Trump would probably say we should use more plastic.
