Obama Hates Trans Fats and Also Freedom

Good news -- the FDA has ordered the food industry to remove Trans Fats from all of their products.

But many doctors say that trans fats are some of the worst fats that people can consume, because they raise so-called LDL cholesterol. That makes them even unhealthier than the saturated fats in butter and cheese, said Alice Lichtenstein, professor of nutrition science and policy at Tufts University. While saturated fats in butter raise LDL, they also raise HDL cholesterol, the so-called good cholesterol.

Doctors estimate that eradicating trans-fats would prevent 20,000 heart attacks and 7,000 deaths from heart attacks per year, said cardiologist Suzanne Steinbaum, director of women's heart health at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York.

My initial reaction to the news was that Republicans will probably respond to this unprecedented encroachment on our liberty by going to bat for Trans Fats and heart attacks, and not a moment too soon Bobby Jindal weighed in.

Ha! Get it? Because he won't name the terrorists but he'll name Trans Fats. Great stuff.

When this action was first proposed, Rand Paul was first out of the gate with an outraged, fist-shaking how dare they! response in the name of Freedumb and Choice.

Now that the FDA has announced the final regulations, it’s Bobby Jindal’s turn to … well, it’s not clear what that tweet actually does, apart from demonstrate he’s unfit for elected office. It’s too stupid to take seriously and it falls flat as snark.

Maybe this is Jindal’s desperate, flailing attempt to make it out of the first round—pool play, in World Cup parlance—of the 2015–16 edition of Who Wants to Be a GOP Presidential Candidate? by chucking red meat to The Base. Or maybe it’s something else entirely.

Either way, I can’t force myself to care.

Saving American Lives™ is only a good and worthy goal if it can be accomplished militarily, by killing people and blowing shit up in faraway lands. Saving American lives by providing access to health care and regulating industry is a very, very bad thing, because freedom and Socialism™ and stuff.
