One Nation Under Fear

Via John Cole, here's Maureen Dowd today:

He’s so sure of himself and his actions that he fails to see that he misses the moment to be president — to be the strong father who protects the home from invaders, who reassures and instructs the public at traumatic moments.

What strikes me most about this is the notion that the failed Underpants Bomber thing demands a father protector to reassure us that we're safe from the terrible devilish Underpants Evildoer and his incendiary taint.

Look, I realize that we're a spazzy, easily-frightened people, but for Maureen Dowd to request that President Obama treat us this way -- as opposed to treating us like adults -- is pathetic. The previous administration treated us like pee-pee-pants children, and succeeded in exploiting this flaw in our national character. Dowd wants more of that?

Adding... And you know what? Bush waiting six days to respond to the Shoe Bomber was about right -- it was actually quite shocking that they didn't lean on the panic button for a change.
