Steve King Wants to Defund Harriet Tubman

Written by SK Ashby

Iowa congressman and man who can't forget what he buried in that corn field Steve King has introduced an amendment that would prevent the U.S. Treasury from placing Harriet Tubman on the 20 dollar bill.

If he has his way, King's amendment will be attached to an appropriations bill that covers the Treasury.

The congressman introduced an amendment that would bar the Treasury Department from spending any funds to redesign paper money or coin currency. If approved, the language would nullify Treasury’s plans to replace the current image of President Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill with a portrait of Tubman — a black woman after generations of white men on the money.

The good news is even if Steve King were able to successfully pass his amendment, congressional Republicans have been unable to pass any of their own appropriations bills. King's dream of preventing a black abolitionist from being displayed on our currency is dead in the water either way.

Congressional dysfunction may save the Harriet Tubman 20 dollar bill.
