Pivot? Ok..but, he pivots right back at the next Nazi rally.

  • katanahamon

“Not the tennis ball machine that it was…” sorry Buzz, guess you should have waited until the latest Nazi rally was over before that observation..turns out, he’s crazier than ever. Rump has proven himself to be such a divider, a liar, etc etc, I don’t see why impeachment or removal isn’t imminent. No, no’s how much he’s contained by what people around him are mollifying him with. I think they lie to him, or are preparing “actual fake news” in print for him to look at.

Yep..Rump is being let off the hook, no amount of lying or cheating or stealing or fraud or criminality provokes journalists into calling him out on the spot, or holding him to any standards of honesty or morals whatsoever. Why??

Donald Trump stared directly at the sun, despite shouted warnings not to do so. Someone on the internet (maybe a commenter at TPM?) suggested we all shout, “Don’t resign!” at Trump and see what happens.

The best anyone can hope for is an ugly, bloody, deadly stalemate in Afghanistan. Or, if you prefer …

If the Trump administration doesn’t tell anyone what it’s doing in Afghanistan or what the expected result might be, then nobody can blame Trump for any failures. That’s all this is, despite The Dear Leader’s blather about not telegraphing our moves.

Likewise, sending a relatively small number of military personnel into Afghanistan and telling the brass to have at it isn’t a plan, per se, but it does mean if things don’t improve, Trump will say he did what The Generals wanted, but they screwed it up. Trump will declare himself blameless, which is all he was trying to do in the first place.

The smartest thing anyone in or out of government to do would be to sit down for a long talk with Sarah Chayes, who knows Afghanistan better than most diplomats (the words “corruption” and “tribal” and “complicated” would come up repeatedly).

It will be interesting to see whether Trump voters are more loyal to The Dear Leader or Breitbart. I suspect they will split 60/40 or so in favor of Trump, but I could be very wrong. As for Steve Bannon, he may not be trying to influence Trump’s behavior as much as fomenting chaos among White House aides; Bannon always seems to me to be verging on pure nihilism, after all.

It’s not surprising that Donald Trump echoed George W Bush with eerie accuracy: neither had the faintest idea what he was saying and both were hoping against hope they wouldn’t swallow their own tongues during their speeches. Bland platitudes are purpose-made for just those moments.

Bob, I like your statue idea. The thought of Donald Jr and Eric leaving to visit Pops in Leavenworth and having to walk past a line of statues of Hillary Clinton, Rachel Maddow, Robert Mueller, Maxine Waters and everyone else who was a thorn in The Dear Leader’s side makes me happy.

The next election Bill Maher wins will be his … lemme do the math here … first. Gavin Newsom has won something like eight. I’m going to go with Newsom’s political instincts on this one.

Kevin Drum flagged that “defray the cost” line, too. Since Trump spent the entire campaign bleating that “we” should have taken—stolen—Iraq’s oil, I assume he’s proposing the US loot Afghanistan instead. Has anyone checked to see if Trump has a stake in a mining company?

Winning hearts and minds by building infrastructure is the way China deals with the underdeveloped world. We, on the other hand, declare we can’t afford any of that nonsense and then contract for more expensive weapons systems. There’s something wrong with this picture.

“Define ‘winning’ and what do we get to do with you when you’re proven wrong?” Amen.

Bob, you had to expect Trump’s speech would excite pundits. They’re very stupid and have a limited repertoire of reactions, and they’re desperate for Trump to become Presidential! Godot will show up before a presidential Donald Trump does, but the overpaid babblers will never realize it.

I’d say Ds need to aim for a 65/35 win in every electiion. Anything less is too close for comfort.

tRump can rant in a whisper. I,on the other hand, have to shout! HE IS NEVER GOING TO PIVOT! He is who he is. Deal with that. Sorry, Bob and Buzz, not meant for you. Send that to Philip Rucker for me.

  • ProudLiberalAlways

Yeah, I hate to be such a stickler about these things, but let’s state the FACTS as they are. No, we didn’t so much “bug out” of Afghanistan and the rest of the world——–tRump fired every diplomat and all embassy personnel, remember? He had apparently swallowed Bannon and Jones’ paranoia about “deep state” people. And promptly ordered EVERYONE home IMMEDIATELY. Then he didn’t replace anyone. HIS FAULT ALONE!!!!!!!

  • ProudLiberalAlways

Hi guys!! In answer to Bob——NO, it’s not a plan, it’s an abdication. POTUS is supposed to actually be in charge, but then you know that. I’m finding tRump’s behavior bit baffling in fact. I’ve noticed ever since the election, for a guy whose whole life has been “look, it’s sooooo important they put MY name on it…” He sure doesn’t seem anxious to have his name on anything that counts! (those exec. orders—-worth shit, as you know). In fact, he puts me in mind of the episode of M*A*S*H where Hawkeye is OD, Radar gives him a form that needs signing, and he (Hawk) tells him over and over “You’re not putting the War in my name”. For God’s Sake, even the founders understood that POTUS were likely NOT going to be military experts, but wanted at least SOME civilian input!! Jeesh, tRump is D U M B !!!!

  • Too funny while you were recording this show, I was typing up a response to Ashby’s post about Trump’s Afghanistan Non-Policy and I also mentioned Charlie Wilson’s War. We’re stepping into a major clusterf*ck and Putin is tickled pink. He’s been waiting decades to get back at us for what we did to Russia by arming the Taliban resistance. Trump is either too ignorant to know what’s he’s getting us into and/or he’s Putin puppet. Either way, we’re screwed.

    • Remember, Putin, Iran and China initially supported our invasion of Afghanistan. They all know what to make of this.
