Bob and Chez: Don’t be fooled by Trump repeating things. He knows that repetition drives statements into the listeners’ brains. A good sales technique.

  • Trump doing the plug for LL Bean is a perfect example of his abuse of power, and another solid indication of what we can expect. The LL Bean heiress is a big-time donor facing some backlash, so Trump was paying her back.

Given his Tit-For-Tat Game Theory strategy, he’ll throw you a bone if you’re nice, and spank you if you’re not.

Guess how much bigger those Bones and Spankings are gonna get once his petty-minded minions are put in charge of a system of rewards and punishments at the FBI and the IRS etc etc etc.

  • KABoink_after_wingnut_hacker

It’s not just republican voters who are to blame for this shit-show, it’s also the fault of ideological left-wing purists who “just weren’t excited” enough to vote for the Democratic candidate.
Thanks for unleashing white supremacists, forced birthers and fucking up the supreme court for the next three generations.

      • Scopedog

You know, Victor….that’s absolutely spot on. And I saw that attitude yesterday from some at the “Save the ACA” rally I went to. Now, overall, it was a fantastic and invigorating experience, and many, many people attended. There were politicians and ordinary people speaking about how the ACA was important and how it saves lives.

But (and you knew this was coming…) there were those few who just HAD to show the purity. So you had people holding up signs attacking Senators Booker and Menenedez. So helpful. And someone yelled out “Revolution!!” when a speaker told the audience what what necessary to change things. The speaker emphasized voting, getting involved with Democrats, and civil disobedience.

Nothing about “revolution”, of course–but that’s usually the end point for those far Left purists who, let’s face it, will be financially safe when the shit hits the fan.

Oh, and since no one has brought him up in a while…H.A. Goodman is still a fucking lunatic, and on his Twitter account he’s still bashing Hillary and giving Trump praise and patting himself on the back because he “claimed” to have predicted the outcome of the election. In short, he regurgitated the same thing you wrote above.

  • muselet

Bob, that is a genuinely revolting pic at the top of the page, but you knew that.

Chez, you’re absolutely right. The Rs want nothing other than to make Barack Obama not exist. It’s been their fondest desire since November 2008, a desire that’s animated all their more disgusting behavior these past eight years (eg, birferism).

If the Rs manage to repeal or undermine the ACA—as I keep saying—they will be making health insurance companies non-viable. The industry won’t stop with abandoning the individual market, it will bail on the whole health insurance market. That’s what uncertainty will do to insurance companies.

Hey, hey, hey, Donald Trump is Making America Great Again! one Staples visit at a time (yes, I am riffing on Trevor Noah’s line).

The Trump Organization’s plan for dealing with conflicts of interest boil down to ignoring all conflicts of interest. Okay, there’s a little bit of window dressing (an “ethics adviser,” for example), but there’s no substance to it.

I don’t own any L.L.Bean products because they’re absurdly expensive and they’re designed for a climate other than that of suburban Southern California. I have no intention of boycotting the company, though, just because Linda Bean made an illegally-large donation to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. That way lies madness. If the company had endorsed Trump or made official campaign merch, then a boycott would be in order.

I’m with Kevin Drum: on the whole, BuzzFeed was justified in publishing the Trump dossier. Drum makes a—for me—convincing case.

I’m less disturbed by Trump’s bullying (it’s disturbing but, well, it’s Trump) than by Sean Spicer warning Jim Acosta that he’ll be ejected (here, accounts diverge: Acosta says Spicer threatened to have him removed from Wednesday’s press conference, while Spicer insists he threatened to kick him out of future press conferences) for demanding to ask a follow-up question. This. Is. Not. Normal.

Exceptional America has elected an orange version of, it seems, Jacob Zuma. Only time will tell if Exceptional America has elected an orange version of Robert Mugabe.

If Donald Trump had an iota of self-awareness, he’d realize he’s Vladimir Putin’s catspaw. If this were a movie, he’d have that (awful, clichéd) sits-up-in-bed-in-a-cold-sweat moment of realization at the top of Act 2, then man up and Do Right By America for the Act 3 climax. Alas, he so lacks self-reflection he can’t recognize himself in a mirror. Also, this is not a movie.

Donald Trump has convinced himself—because his tiny, fragile ego won’t allow him to think anything else—The American People! support him. I don’t think he believes it’s necessary to juice his approval ratings by staging a phony terrorist attack. That’s actually the positive side of this. The negative side is that it’s clear to Da’esh and every crazy with a cause that Turmp will overreact to anything, so all it will take is a single car bomb that kills a handful of people and he’ll be declaring war on Islam.

“Part shock-jock, part New York Mafia goombah.” Damn, Bob, that sums up Trump’s personality perfectly.

(Bob, you missed your fuckin’ at 10:11 and your fucked at 53:45. Can’t blame you for either, but …)

    • You are right about LL Bean. Their products really aren’t for suburban SoCal

    • I haven’t bought anything from LL Bean since I moved to AZ, so ditto on that.

In re: Donald and the mirror….I would bet that he not only lacks self-reflection but also lacks an understanding of object permanence.

    • My (quite liberal) dad’s wardrobe is probably a majority L. L. Bean (perfect for Washington State) so I expect he’s having a sort of existential crisis right now.

  • ProudLiberalAlways

President Obama was a rookie when elected, but fortunately for us, he is very intelligent and a quick study. Rump, I think, can’t even read. I think Chez is right——there’s so much wrong here we cannot allow him to be sworn in! There HAS to be something we can do. Yeah Tina D.

  • ProudLiberalAlways

Maybe Rump is always freaking about “unfair” because no one has ever had to be tolerated opposing him before. And someone mentioned that he wasn’t wearing his wedding ring at the “press” conference. It’s personal for me too, Bob, I got health care for the 1st time in my life a few years ago—Thanx Obama!—-and I’m 53. Now in a year or 2 it’ll be gone. I’m NOT at an age where that is good in any way!!

  • ProudLiberalAlways

We’re just days away from Donald’s dystopia. Even atheists maybe should learn to pray——you don’t have to mean it! But we need something! The worst part is, remember Shrub’s administration, where Rove and Cheney both often referenced their “own” reality? There was a White House reality and one for the public at large.

  • ProudLiberalAlways

Did anybody else see this? “Senator Charles Grassley from Iowa said, “It seems to me that when you go back through the campaign and all the things that Trump said that ought to give him political problems and all the things that were caught on tape  —  that he would probably just as soon not have the world know about it  –  it’s kind of improbable to me that anybody who knows anything about Trump  —  that’s going to end up hurting Trump. And he was elected President of the United States.”
Is it me, or is this kinda shocking?

I have to say, I have a hard time feeling bad for CNN. This strikes me in a way as karma. How many Jeffrey Lord clones can one network put on the air. I don’t know anything about what attracts ratings in the media but this is what CNN would have to do to get me to take it seriously.

Cut ties with every one of these freakish Trump surrogates. Find contributors with actual expertise to bring to their coverage instead of continuing this cynical freak show of putting on an avalanche of idiots whose only qualification is “I like Trump.”

They don’t have to be left leaning. Just posses actual qualifications. Scientists, political scientists, physicians, law enforcement, Intel analysts, economists, military people with all of the above backgrounds. EXPERTS. Or here’s a wild thought, MORE JOURNALISTS! NO PUNDITS! Stop making ratings your only concern and you might actually get some.

But this obscene endless attempt to suck up to Trump and his brain dead supporters is just pitiful. Conservatives will never respect any media that doesn’t feed them what they want to hear. Stop trying.

    • Scopedog

Hey, they hired Corey Lewandowski (sic). That was the equivalent of bending over and taking it up the ass from Trump.

  • Aynwrong

There’s a brief scene towards the end of V for Vendetta in a bar where the customers are watching the news and John Hurt’s dictator comes on the TV screen during the news raging even worse than usual and one of the customers says to another one something like “Do you believe any of this shit?” I always took that to mean that even the blue collar vote that probably empowered him can no longer take his words seriously. I have to wonder how long, if ever we reach that point and if even then the “poor, benighted, blue collar, working class white guys” who according to our glorious news media (h/t Muslet) were now supposed to feel endless pity for will wake up and abandon this degenerate.

    • Scopedog

I keep thinking about when V asks the citizens how did things get so bad, how did they get there. His answer was chilling–and very relevant today: “You need only look into a mirror”.

I think I’m going to re-watch it ASAP.

      • Aynwrong

Children of Men has gotten a reassessment as well. I’ve always been impressed by both films. I never thought that they would prove to be so frighteningly accurate.

        • Scopedog

Loved CHILDREN OF MEN. The two writers on that film are also the ones who are behind THE EXPANSE, the best SF series on tv right now.

  • Badgerite

“No deals, no loans, no nothing”? Prove it. Release the tax returns.

    • Scopedog

Well, if anything, this proves once again that Hillary Clinton really was the most transparent, most qualified candidate last year.

But the media wanted emails, the Right wanted blood, and the far Left wanted purity.

  • There aren’t enough F-bombs to express my anger at what Congress has done. I’m worried that they’ll drop my 6 year old son’s insurance. And when my husband retires in two years, the only way I would be able to get health insurance would be the ACA.

+20 for the Jon Snow beat down reference. I will gleefully envision Sen. Sleestak’s face being beat pulpy.

    • Scopedog

I’m just numb…but I’m also very, very angry.

I’m angry at the GOP and Trump. I’m angry at the media and Putin. But I’m also angry at the far Left for their stunts with Bernie and Stein.

But I’m just angry at the damned country. Yes, I know the majority voted against Trump but enough voted for him, and yet now their asses are in a fucking vice. And I don’t care.

I’m not angry at Obama or Hillary. They tried. We just didn’t give a damn.

Do I think they’ll repeal the ACA? Since I’m not in DC like Lawrence O’Donnell, I don’t know. I do know that I’ve called my Senators, my Representative, Paul Ryan’s office, and have let them know not to repeal it. I also told my Rep that yes, there are people in his district who will be affected and there is no replacement. There never was. On the other hand, the public is waking up to the fact that yes, holy shit, they are going to kill this thing and that millions depend on it including millions in red states. And since Lyin’ shithead Ryan hasn’t had a plan for years, then…

…then there’s a chance that this thing will blow up in their faces. Because the opinion is against it, and also, some GOP are afraid of repealing it because their constituents are going to be pissed and tear them to shreds come 2018.

Other than that…well, I don’t know. I’m taking things one day at a time now, but to say that I am angry at the world is an understatement. People were warned about what the fuck could happen, and yet some just chose to play grab-ass and think that this was all a fucking game. It wasn’t, as the Bush II years showed us.

As for the intelligence agencies–if Trump and company think that they are just going to roll over, think again. He chose to fuck with them, and they are going to hit him right back.

How are we this stupid, Chez? Well, it took 30+ years of GOP plans and the far Left idiocy in 2000 and 2010 and 2014 and 2016, but here we are.

Sorry for the long rant, IrishGrrrl–just had to get it off my chest.

    • And then eaten by dogs

      • Well I already think of McConnell as dog shit so there is a definite symmetry to that.
