I love the Alex Jones impersonations. Kennet (if you’re out there) you should put a clip on the After Party soundboard if you can.

Oh, dear, it’s Rocktober and I forgot to book the bouncy castle and 4 x 12 Marshalls (that is how one celebrates, isn’t it?).

In this afternoon’s command-performance meeting at the White House, Barack Obama said he is willing to negotiate all policies with the Rs, after they fund the government and raise the debt ceiling. Whereupon John Boehner went before the cameras and claimed the President refused to negotiate, and that the Rs were looking for fairness for The American People (yes, you could hear the capital letters in his voice). Made me want to throw something at my TV, that did.

As Charlie Pierce pointed out today, “The vandals in our government have been elected by people who believe certain things. That is the reason that the vandals are doing what they do.” After quoting PPP at length on the things Rs believe, he went on to say:

This did not happen yesterday. This did not — pace, Ed Kilgore — happen in 2009. What we see today is the prion disease manifesting itself in garish symptoms, but, as we mentioned yesterday, the country ate the monkey brains in 1980, when it allowed — nay, celebrated — Ronald Reagan’s spurious anecdotes as works of innate political genius.

Those were the days in which the Republican party, having already abandoned its long-standing support for racial equality, also abandoned science and reason in favor of splinter Protestantism and whatever secular hogwash polled well, no matter whether it was true or not. That was when the press decided that anything should be treated as true if enough people demonstrated at the polls that they were willing to believe it. The reign of morons began with the triumph of bullshit.

“We’ve made too many compromises already, too many retreats. They invade our space and we fall back. They assimilate entire worlds and we fall back. Not again. The line must be drawn here! This far, no further!” It’s a fine little speech, regardless of what you think of the movie. (Me, I have a soft spot for a movie in which Alfre Woodard says, in all sincerity, “You broke your little ships.”)

The Rs can’t abandon the TPers, Bob. That’s their base. In order to shed the nitwits, the GOP would have to change its policies and politics, which would require grown-ups to take back the party. I don’t know about you, but I don’t see too many grown-ups around the GOP. The “reasonable Republicans” you listed at the top of the show are only one of those two things, and it’s not the former.

“It is the responsibility of the media to report correctly.” Chez, I couldn’t agree more, but as you have implied, they’re failing miserably in their responsibility.

The loonies have been carpet-bombing the letters to my local fishwrap, insisting that *scary music sting* Obamacare is a disaster that must be repealed before Americans sink further into dependency on evil government blah blah blah, same talking points Rush Limbaugh was dishing out a few days before. The letters in the Dog Trainer have been slightly less insane, and even though it’s a snake pit, at least rational views are also published. A presidential press conference wouldn’t be much of a counterweight to the whole of Righty media, but it would be a welcome development.

Bob, the Rs will never drop the lie. Never. You say it’s because the lie is working for them, and that may be true, but they wouldn’t drop it even if it were backfiring badly on them because—and here we loop right back to the top of the show—the base, the TPers, would crucify them if they let go of the delusion.

Thanks for the Week in Derp, Bob. Now, where did I put the vodka …?

Dean Chambers had the right idea after the 2012 elections: admit he was wrong and slink out of sight, hoping no one would recognize him down at the local Cracker Barrel. The lure of the limelight was too great for him, though, so a few months ago he sent up a trial balloon saying Mitt Romney would have won if not for the Obama regime’s voter suppression and intimidation! Alas, he wasn’t tarred and feathered. Now, he’s put his own special spin on a stupid rumor from five years or more ago. The best response to Chambers is to point and laugh. I honestly can’t be bothered to work up outrage over someone like him.
