The GOP Put a Pro-Confederate Flag Measure in Their Zika Bill Which is Now Dead

We saw this coming last week when congressional Republicans unveiled the bill, but now it's officially dead.

House and Senate Republicans, having passed their own Zika bills, went to conference to negotiate a final package. That package included provisions that would cut funding from Obamacare and Planned Parenthood, all but guaranteeing that it would not pass the Senate and earning a presidential veto.

What we didn't know at the time is it also included this provision:

Democrats opposed the bill, which they complained was negotiated between Senate and House Republicans with little input from them and was loaded with "poison pill" riders that cut health programs, restricted funding for birth control services from Planned Parenthood, weakened clean water laws and blocked a ban on displaying the Confederate flag at U.S. military cemeteries.

Republicans are now accusing Democrats of being the ones who are blocking funds to fight the Zika virus, but we all know that was the point, don't we?

This bill was so full of garbage we can only conclude it was designed to fail. In other words, Republicans are deliberately playing political gotcha! while having done nothing about the Zika virus which has already infected hundreds of pregnant women in the U.S.

Speaking of which, the Florida health department just confirmed the first baby to be born with Zika-related birth defects in the state.

Let's not forget the Olympic games in the mosquito and shit-filled waters of Rio are just around the corner.

“Republicans are now accusing Democrats of being the ones who are blocking funds to fight the Zika virus …”

“This conflict is all YOUR fault! If you would just let me do anything I want everything would be nice and calm and peaceful.”

Once again, the GOP acts like an abusive spouse.

Since we have to stay on the side of facts and science, I should point out that the risk of catching Zika from mosquitoes in Rio will be minimal for the Olympics. It will be Rio’s winter, and the mosquito will be mostly dead.

Of course, it’s also sexually transmittable, so there’s that.

And scientifically speaking, the water is full of shit.

  • You couldn’t pay me enough to go to Rio–literally.

Roy Blunt, who unfortunately represents me in the Senate, was all over social media shaming democrats for voting against Zika and Vets. Absolutely no shame.

I think the Republicans don’t understand what “promote the general welfare” means…or they don’t care.

More proof, if such were needed, that Rs are very good at campaigning but are crap at governing.

The GOP are always claiming that that they are the patrioticiest of all people, not like the commie loving Democrats.

So why would they want to fly the flag of an enemy of the United States at US national military cemeteries?

The gop is certifiable, this is sickening clear with every passing day.

  • Badgerite

No words! God forbid they should put the American people first.

    Unreal. That’s all I got.
