The Jury is Still Out

deGrasseTyson

George “Not a Scientist” Will says the jury is still out on whether or not the Ebola virus can be transmitted through the air.

During an interview with Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace, George insisted that the science is not settled even though it is completely settled.

“There are doctors who are saying that in a sneeze or some cough, some of the airborne particles can be infectious,” Will said. [...]

“We’re getting used to people declaring scientific debates closed, over and settled — they rarely are.”

To say that the science is not settled seems to be the new line that’s deployed any time a conservative writer or politician needs to make an argument that doesn’t hold water. Whether it’s climate change, abortion, or deadly diseases, scientific fact can be very inconvenient if that you don’t like what the facts say.

To quote Neil deGrasse Tyson — “The good thing about science is that it’s true whether or not you believe in it.”

The doctors referred to by Will did not actually say what he claims they said.

It seems to me that conservatives (i.e., people on the GOP’s color-war team) have great difficulty translating English into English.

I think a lot of liberals do too, but only in the bowels of Internet comment threads, not actual politicians or pundits. Maybe it’s a mark of an ideologue to be constantly mis-paraphrasing what people say in order to pretend they said what you want to hear, or what you want them to have said in order to confirm your biases.

George Will should stick to writing and bloviating about things he knows something about. Like … erm … give me a minute … no, sorry, I’m drawing a blank.

    Shut up, George.

Charlie Pierce was eviscerating George Will over some political stupidity a few months ago and added parenthetically, “Lousy baseball writer, too.”

I make a point of avoiding most sports writing like the proverbial, so it may be that Pierce was indulging in a cheap shot and that Will knows baseball. I defer to others’ judgment on that.

I do know George F Will should never write about science. Or economics. Or politics.

There are people that believe the Earth is flat so…the science isn’t settled! I hate these fucking people.

    Huh…that is interesting.
From Mr. Will’s own body of work the “science” (vomited a little bit there) behind such conservative things such as supply side economics, socio-political Darwinism, Lost Cause-ism, anti-climate change is settled and anyone challenging those “closed debates” is just a stupid and/or duped hippie who hates America.

No! I’m shocked! Wait. No I’m not.
