Guns

The More Things Stay the Same…

This is an extraordinarily familiar clip from All in the Family circa nearly 40 years ago in which Archie gets the chance to present a TV editorial against gun control. Every one of the points he makes are still being used by gun fetishists. It's uncanny.

The only difference between Archie and a lot of #tcot and blog commenters is that Archie used his name and address instead of hiding behind a pseudonym. Oh, and this perspective was actually considered satirical back then. Now it's pervasive.

Archie Bunker was a man ahead of his time. More’s the pity.

  • So there are 4 million NRA members. Membership costs $35. If 5 million like minded progressives were to join, we could outvote the 4 million and use the extra $175 million dues to lobby FOR gun control.

Good point, but first we’d have to get many of those progressives to stop whining about how Obama’s going to betray them, drone strikes, and Bradley Manning.

      Just saying….

  • You know we’re in trouble when satire becomes reality.

    • That seems to be happening a lot lately…

Watch the full episode. Listening to Archie and Meathead debate this issue, one can only find it astonishing how little the conversation has changed in 40 years.

“….one can only find it astonishing how little the conversation has changed in 40 years.”

And that is truly terrifying. So much for all the talk about how we’ve “advanced”.
