The NRA’s Meltdown Continues

Written by SK Ashby

A war of words and accusations between National Rifle Association (NRA) president Oliver North and CEO Wayne LaPierre led to some actual consequences over the weekend as North announced that he will not return as the NRA's president.

The announcement was made on Saturday at the NRA's convention where it appeared that no one really knows what's happening to the organization.

From the Associated Press:

“Please know I hoped to be with you today as NRA president endorsed for reelection. I’m now informed that will not happen,” North said in a statement that was read by Richard Childress, the NRA’s first vice president, to members at the group’s annual convention.

North, whose one-year term ends Monday, did not show up for the meeting, and his spot on the stage was left empty, his nameplate still in its place. His statement was largely met with silence. Wayne LaPierre, whom North had tried to push out, later received two standing ovations. [...]

Near the end of the two-hour meeting, some members challenged efforts to adjourn and pushed to question the board about controversies involving its financial management, the relationship with its longtime public relations firm and details of what North sought to raise about alleged misspending, sexual harassment and other mismanagement.

The NRA has formally accused the producers of NRATV of over-billing the gun lobby and accused Oliver North specifically of double-billing lobby. The producers of NRATV signed a deal to pay North for work that he was already being paid for as the lobby's president according to a lawsuit filed by the NRA.

In response, North accused Wayne LaPierre of engaging in vague financial behavior of his own and this swirl of accusations has prompted the New York attorney general's office to open an investigation of the gun lobby.

I don't know who's right, but my gut says they're all guilty as hell.

You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.
