In other news, 13 people were killed and another 20 were injured in a mass shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon today.

Before gun fetishes deploy their favorite talking point, know that UCC is not a so-called "gun free zone." Guns are allowed on campuses in Oregon.

Meanwhile, the CEO's of 10 major food industry corporations, including the likes of General Mills and Nestle, have addressed a letter to Congress asking them to act on climate change before it ruins everyone's day.

“The challenge presented by climate change will require all of us — government, civil society and business — to do more with less. For companies like ours, that means producing more food on less land using fewer natural resources. If we don’t take action now, we risk not only today’s livelihoods, but those of future generations,” the letter reads.

Pretty soon the fossil fuel industry will be the only industry not calling for action on climate change.

Programming note... I have business to take care of tomorrow and I may be late if not offline altogether. Have a good weekend.

It would not have mattered if there had been someone on campus with a gun. The “good guy with a gun” scenario is a pathetic fantasy cooked up by corporate whores and bought into by rubes who are “Jack Bauer” wannabes. Had some private citizen pulled out a gun to defend themselves they probably could have very easily shot the wrong person. As almost happened during the Tucson, Arizona shooting where a private citizen did have a handgun on him, drew it and almost shot someone else who also had drawn a gun. A plainclothes police officer. Thank God he didn’t pull the trigger.
The only reason people would ever likely need to protect themselves with a gun is from someone else with a gun. And the only reason that has become more of a possibility is because our society is now drowning in artillery . And sadly there are just enough fools who have turned these machines into their own personal fetish objects in order to make it impossible to implement ANY measure no matter how tame and middle of the road. They won’t even allow for for a simple background check or the idea that if you own a gun, register the gun!
This is a political problem. The problem is that the GOP is insane. It will only be solved when enough of the GOP has been removed. I wish it weren’t so.

and that the Democrats are spineless.

        Sadly, yes.

And therein lies the big gaping hole in the logic of everyone being armed with a gun. How in the hell do you know who is the actual threat?

When the only tool you have is a gun, every problem looks like a bad guy with a gun.

      • Aynwrong

Exactly. That, and most privately armed citizens are amateurs. The only thing more guns would accomplish is to increase the number of the dead.
