The Total Ideological Immersion Suit

It protects against Sharia Law!

Artist - RJ Matson

In other news, a federal judge in Atlanta blocked Georgia's "Papers Please" immigration law which has left the state 11,000 farm-workers short, and Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell reiterated today that the GOP will not support any tax increase, whatsoever, as part of a deficit reduction deal. See how serious they are about attacking the deficit?

    Everyone watch it? Yes? Good.

So question, what do you all think about Hayes’ contention that the fundamental structures of government are manefestly broken, and of the contention that President Obama is apparently unable to see that? Is Hayes right? If so, where the hell do we go from there?

    • I think Obama is amongst the smartest 1000 people in this country, and I have NO doubt that he understands the issues with which he has to deal, which would include gov structure. I think it is utterly silly to make such an accusation against him, particularly when the person making the accusation has no way of reading Obama’s mind; and yes, that last part was meant to be sarcastic.

      • The_Dork_Knight

If it helps, I think that Hayes would not say that it has anything to do with intelligence but rather it is President Obama’s natural disposition to assume that people are negotiating with him in good faith… That, to paraphrase Hayes, President Obama believes that he can will fundamentally broken structures of government into functioning again.

        • MrDHalen

I don’t think President Obama believes he can will a national fix. I also don’t think he trust Republicans at all, but he’s the president and must lead all of us in appearance. I get the feeling he is pushing the Republicans as far right as possible to expose them to the non-political public for the greedy fascist they really are and make it harder for the media to protect them.

Our government is not broken, our society is broken. Too many Americans have no idea how to vote for their own economic interest. Our media has been consumed by the corporations who have also purchased many of our politicians. One man or president can’t fix this, people need to wake up and realize both sides are not the same and money in our politics is destroying our nation.

If this country fails, it will be the fought of the American citizens who fell asleep at the wheel of their own democracy.

          • Dan, our g0vernment is completely dependent on the status of said society so if one is broken, so is the other.

          • MrDHalen

The structure of our government is fine, but the people populating it are the problem.

          • Dan in response to you saying, “The structure of our government is fine”

That is the problem with all forms of government. Hell, communism in theory is not really such a bad idea. Its the people who implement it that always mess it up and make it unworkable. That’s why we’ve seen it fail over and over again. So no matter how perfect our government is on paper, it will only ever be as good as the people. That does not mean we can’t make the structures or processes even more immune to the vagaries of human behavior. I think perhaps that is what Hayes means.

      • Nicole, I think he is probably one of the smartest and most capable men of his generation and thank goodness he is leading our country. That being said, I still worry, as TDK and Hayes do, that he is either being naive or that he is within a bubble in DC and can’t see the larger picture. That’s not to say that what I think is the larger picture of a broken system as described by Hayes is necessarily correct either. But I have had experience in my life to look at trends in our country and in other countries and have accurately assessed what was going to happen as a result. I sincerely hope that we (meaning TDK, myself, Hayes, Maddow, etc) are wrong and that Pres. O does see the fundamental problems. I’m just not encouraged by what I see from the Pres.’ overt actions.

        • The_Dork_Knight

Hayes hints at a book he is writing, and I can’t wait to read it. The reality that our economic, governmental and civil structures have been corrupted to their core is something that I began to instictively suspect in 2004, but have really come to understand intellectually in the last two years. I agree with Hayes. Massive structural reform is the only thing that can fix this problem.

          • Yeah I heard that part about the book. I think its very easy to say we need massive structural changes but what those changes should be, I haven’t a clue.

Blowing up the filibuster in the Senate is a good first step.

Holy crap, Rachel Maddow’s opening monologue tonight was amazing, even by her standards. Republicans, disgusting hypocracy or deliberate, evil sabotage of the ecomomy for partisan purposes. An absolute classic. If you missed it, find it asap.

Adding: Seriously. I sat in awe of this segment. Then I rewatched it and felt the horror of how fracking screwed we are. Hang around for the conversation with Chris Hayes. The segment is here:

      I would say it’s about 50-50.

    • I just watched this….loved the quote, “you should be drawing little mustaches on Obama posters, not legislating”

  • I want a suit for Liberals that keeps us from losing our shpadoinkle over batshit GOP idiocy and how the MSM smiles while repeating it to the American public. Or if not a suit, then some really good, legal weed.

    • Hey, I’ll second that! 🙂

    • Robert Scalzi

come to Oakland… lots of really good legal Weed, what strain do you prefer ??

      • If only I could! I was planning on going to Palm Springs for vacation but that may be nixed. Most likely I will be having a staycation this year. Light one up for me my friend.

        • Robert Scalzi

Will Do IG !! If I don’t my head would explode into a frothy mix
