NBC News reported this morning that former Soviet intelligence officer and unregistered lobbyist Rinat Akhmetshin was present at the meeting where Trump Jr. solicited damaging information on Hillary Clinton.

In what probably shouldn't come as a surprise, Rinat Akhmetshin is now under investigation according to Politico, in part because he's acting as an unregistered foreign agent.

U.S. officials became aware of Akhmetshin’s potential involvement in the meeting earlier this week. Three officials expressed concern about his role to POLITICO and said they were probing it further as part of their larger investigation into ties between Trump associates and the Kremlin. [...]

One U.S. official referred to Akhmetshin as a known “IO,” or intelligence operative.

I expect to see Akhmetshin retroactively register as a foreign agent by Monday. It worked for Paul Manafort and Michael Flynn.

It's raining Russia-related news today.

Trump Jr’s Former Spy Contact is Now Under Investigation

    Of course he is.

Donald Trump Jr’s next explanation of why no one should care about his perfectly innocent nothing of a meeting with Natalia Veselnitskaya ought to be a doozy.

The ability to “retroactively register” is something that will have to be done away with or at least SEVERELY RESTRICTED after this treasonous administration is over.

I don’t know. It might come in handy. I ever get pulled over for not registering a vehicle, I’ll just inform the officer that I will retroactively register it.

        Yeah, good luck with that.

I thought this was interesting, from the AP story on this.

Akhmetshin said he has not been contacted by the U.S. special counsel’s office or the FBI about the meeting with Trump Jr. He said he’s willing to talk with the Senate Judiciary Committee, whose chairman has pressed the Justice Department about why Akhmetshin has not registered as a foreign agent.

The chairman, Republican Chuck Grassley of Iowa, said in a March letter that Akhmetshin has “reportedly admitted to being a ‘Soviet counterintelligence officer’ and has a long history of lobbying the U.S. government for pro-Russia matters.”

EDITING TO ADD: How long before Chuck Grassley is backtracking on those words?

“Soviet counterintelligence officer”. Well, obviously it was an innocent meeting about adoption policy and nothing else.
