Trump Might Use His Campaign to Pay Himself

Written by SK Ashby

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has made a very big deal out of his so-called "self-funded" campaign, mentioning it almost every time he speaks, but it may have been only a temporary arrangement.

Trump's campaign staff reportedly won't rule out the possibility he'll use donations to pay himself back.

Legally, Trump has the option of recouping any or all of the money he spent on the primaries.

That is because Trump almost never directly donates funds to his campaign. He has only spent about $317,000 of his own money outright.

Trump has loaned his "self-funded" campaign over $35 million, meaning anyone who donates to Trump going forward could end up paying Trump himself.

It's not very unusual for a campaign to reimburse a candidate, but most candidates don't boast about being "self-funded" with the expectation the money will be paid back.

Words either have meaning or they don't. Given that we're talking about Trump, they probably have no meaning.
