Election 2016

Trump Reportedly Picks Anti-Abortion Hardliner Mike Pence for VP. Maybe. Who Knows?

We won't know for sure until Donald Trump and his running mate descend the escalator at Trump Tower arm and arm, but Trump will reportedly pick Indiana Governor Mike Pence as his vice presidential running mate.

The selection was first reported by the Indianapolis Star which claims they've confirmed that Mike Pence is the guy.

Gov. Mike Pence is dropping his re-election bid in Indiana to become Donald Trump’s running mate.

IndyStar has confirmed that Trump plans to announce Pence as his selection for vice president, ending a weeks-long vice presidential casting call during which Trump vetted a handful of high-profile Republicans.

As of this writing, the Trump campaign is refusing to state publicly that Pence has been chose. The current word is that Trump himself has not actually made a decision.

Who's telling the truth? Your guess is as good as mine. When you're dealing with Donald Trump, there's no way to know anything for sure. He could wake up in the morning and change his mind. He could change his mind over the course of eating his daily dose of McDonald's this evening.

What we do know for sure is that Mike Pence is an intense asshole and a staunch social conservative, but I repeat myself. Pence may be best known for signing an anti-LGBT "religious liberty" bill into law that sparked a boycott of the state. Governor Pence is also responsible for fomenting an outbreak of HIV last year in rural Indiana by defunding Planned Parenthood clinics.

When Republicans took control of Congress in 2011, one of the first things they did was pass a Pence-sponsored bill to defund Planned Parenthood nationwide. They also passed the Pence-sponsored No Taxpayer Funding for Abortions Act which sought redefine rape as "forcible rape." Emily's List has a full rundown on this.

At least for the moment, it appears to me that Trump is using Twitter and cable news as a 24-hour trial balloon of his potential selection of Mike Pence. It would be greatly amusing if Pence suspended his reelection campaign only to have Trump change his mind tomorrow morning.

Whoops?

Did infamous tweeter Donald Trump read the tweets of his own running mate?
