Trump Still Wants Wall Money

As we approach the one year anniversary of the Reign of Morons, Trump is making another pass at funding for his fantasy border wall.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Trump wants to see border wall funding attached to a bill that renews the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

In total, the administration details about $33 billion in desired new border security spending, including funding for technology, personnel and roads. The document refers to this as “critical physical border security requirements.” [...]

The document, from the Customs and Border Protection agency at the Department of Homeland Security, envisions the border-wall project unfolding over 10 years. If carried out as described, by 2027, about 970 miles of the 2,000-mile southwest border would have some sort of fencing or wall separating the U.S. from Mexico.

If it comes down to a choice between renewing DACA and funding Trump's wall, I believe Democrats should walk away.

Democrats can and will campaign on renewing DACA this year and when they regain control of Congress they can renew the program, put a muzzle on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and begin working on a comprehensive reform bill.

A wall, on the other hand, is forever. There's no going back once it's funded.

Even if one assumes good faith on the part of the Trump administration—never a safe assumption—and concludes this is some kind of maximalist opening position in an expected negotiation, demanding that kind of money to build 6400 miles of physical barrier along the border is just plain nuts.

The most generous explanation is that Donald Trump believes he can successfully blame the Ds for the deportation of the Dreamers, presumably arguing that they wouldn’t compromise with the administration. I don’t find that a particularly convincing argument (but I wouldn’t, would I?), and I don’t think most of the country would, either.

I agree, the Ds need to walk away and hang this around the necks of the Rs like a frelling millstone.

It will be a glorious day when Democrats are in charge again and put in place all of the stuff trump sinisterly undid.

Most of all I want the U.S. to be the leaders of climate change prevention and all that comes with it. I want an Environmental President.

Don’t bet your mortgage on that happening, is all I’m saying. It’s just as likely, maybe moreso, that the whole country and its citizens would get burned and destroyed beyond belief when the GOP, the Right Wing Noise Machine™, and the one percenters are through with it. And even then, they can still convince enough stupid people to go along with their ideas at the expense of their own well being.

Through all of it I remain hopeful.

    Couldn’t agree more JM.

Agreed…don’t give in the trumps temper fits.
