Trump Wants to Bring Back “Black Sites”

According to the New York Times, which obtained a draft copy of the order, Trump will resurrect the infamous CIA "black sites" that served as off-the-books torture dungeons under President George W. Bush.

President Trump’s three-page draft order, titled “Detention and Interrogation of Enemy Combatants” and obtained by The New York Times, would also undo many of the other restrictions on handling detainees that Mr. Obama put in place in response to policies of the George W. Bush administration.

If Mr. Trump signs the draft order, he would also revoke Mr. Obama’s directive to give the International Committee of the Red Cross access to all detainees in American custody. That would be another step toward reopening secret prisons outside of the normal wartime rules established by the Geneva Conventions, although statutory obstacles would remain.

Any other country in their right mind would not allow such a site on their lands knowing what we know today about what happened under George W. Bush, but my gut says Trump won't have trouble finding other like-minded dictators who will host his torture dungeons. Filipino president Rodrigo Duterte immediately comes to mind.

Everything old is new again, including America's isolation from the rest of the developed world that we witnessed under Bush. This story brings back a lot of bad memories.

I'm genuinely curious who within the Trump regime leaked this to the Times.

In related news, Liz Cheney, newly-minted Representative from Wyoming, enthusiastically supports the idea of black sites and torture. Because of course she does.

    Alas, she’s not alone.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this leak was authorized. This is the sort of thing that Trump likes to brag about. It’s stuff that appeals to Fox News armchair warriors who listen to the sage advice of Oliver North. Whether torture is effective or not will of course always be immaterial.

They’re proud of this moral insanity.

  • So, black sites, torture, muslim ban, probably can’t wait to restock Gitmo.

There’s your Republican party and the new Autocratic America.

    • Badgerite

Yes, but with who. It is one thing to claim that we were viciously attacked and 3,000 American’s were killed on American soil so we are essentially in a war and people detained on GITMO were “enemy combatants”. We are not really at war right now. We are advisers and allies to others who are at war.
How is any of this constitutionally justified? Let alone needed. Lone wolf terror attacks have gone on for decades and decades and those would include terror attacks from home grown terrorists like Timothy McVeigh who killed 168 people when he blew up the Murrah Federal building in Oklahoma City.
I also understand that they are trying to revive Poindexter’s Total Information Awareness program of monitoring social media and all that the ACLU managed to kill the first time around. Look for it to rear its head again.

Just waiting for someone to pop up and say that Hillary would have done the same thing….or utter that Obama never changed anything from Bush.

I don’t know what’s making me more angry–Trump’s bone stick stone stupid acts of pissing on International Law, or the realization that there were people claiming that Hillary was worse than this bastard.

    • Badgerite

      All of the above.

I’m genuinely curious who within the Trump regime leaked this to the Times.

I like to imagine it’s Kellyanne Conway. I like to imagine that she deeply regrets her role in getting Trump elected and has to drink herself into a stupor every night just to get a moment’s peace from her tortured conscience.

    • muselet

Kellyanne Conway? Nah. Regret requires self-awareness. And a soul.

    • Badgerite

      I doubt it.

  • It’s funny that Herr Gropenfuhrer demands loyalty but his WH leaks worse than those prostitutes he hired (allegedly).
