WHO Declares The Coronavirus a Pandemic

After warning for weeks that the novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, could spread into a pandemic if governments don't take adequate steps to stop it, the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the virus is now a global pandemic.

The COVID-19 viral disease that has swept into at least 114 countries and killed more than 4,000 people is now officially a pandemic, the World Health Organization announced Wednesday.

"This is the first pandemic caused by coronavirus," said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

"In the past two weeks, the number of cases of COVID-19 outside China has increased 13-fold, and the number of affected countries has tripled," Tedros said.

In closely related news, Reuters first reported this morning that the Trump regime has told officials that their coronavirus discussions are now classified.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House has ordered federal health officials to treat top-level coronavirus meetings as classified, an unusual step that has restricted information and hampered the U.S. government’s response to the contagion, according to four Trump administration officials.

The officials said that dozens of classified discussions about such topics as the scope of infections, quarantines and travel restrictions have been held since mid-January in a high-security meeting room at the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), a key player in the fight against the coronavirus.

Staffers without security clearances, including government experts, were excluded from the interagency meetings, which included video conference calls, the sources said.

So, it can now be understood that Trump has not simply contradicted actual health officials by telling the people there's nothing to see here. The White House has actually tried to stop officials and experts from informing the public by threatening them in legal terms. The Trump regime's official cover-up is far bigger in scope than we previously knew.

This is worse than Trump's scheme to extort the Ukrainian government for political favors and if Congress didn't have so many other things to consider right now I would say they should impeach Trump again.

did anyone else see trish regan’s insane rant about how it’s the democrats who are politicizing the covid-19 outbreak to impeach trump?

      TPM commenter dlup:

Bear in mind, these rants are scripted. Perhaps she and Lou Dobbs come up with the craziness on their own, but the production team then presumably does some editing so the segment fits into the show, gets the words on the teleprompter, creates the chyrons and graphics, plans which camera to use, and sequences the rant with the rest of the show. In other words, these are effectively official network statements, not off the cuff moments in which the talent says whatever they want to say.

Which means everyone involved with Trish Regan’s show—and at least one level up in management—is partly responsible for her OTT tirade.

We can expect to see her, and her producer, to move from Fox Business Network to Fox News Channel soon.

Keeping people with expertise out of meetings concerning their areas of expertise is madness.

A high-level former official who helped address public health outbreaks in the George W. Bush administration said “it’s not normal to classify discussions about a response to a public health crisis.”

Yes, but this isn’t something trivial like a mere public health crisis. This threatens Donald Trump’s reelection!

The administration’s shambling, incompetent response to Covid-19 was already going to lead to more transmission of, and deaths from, the virus. Hiding information about the pandemic will only make it more deadly.

    I miss sane government.
