Accountability vs. The Free Market

Chez Pazienza on Goldman, BP and other (apparently immortal) corporations:

These monolithic entities aren't simply too big to fail.

They're too big to even effectively punish.

Now, can you imagine if the free marketeers were in control and dismantled government regulations and privatized more government programs -- putting them in hands of these invincibles? The government, on the other hand, is subject to semi-annual elections in which we can replace everyone if we so choose. There's no such accountability mechanism built into corporate empires.
