Yeah, you’re probably right. What was I thinking?

MItt Romney would simply send Alfred to do the crime-fighting and Donald Trump could never get his enormous melon into the batsuit’s cowl even without dislodging the tribble (and I don’t even want to imagine either of them in what Wikipedia calls “a skintight gray body suit”).

I sense a flaw in your theory.

Sometimes I wonder if billionaires like Trump and Mitt Romney act this clueless because in reality they spend their nights fighting crime and saving lives as Batman?

Sure, because Donald Trump is ridiculous. I’m just wondering if it’s sustainable.

Unmockable? I don’t know. We seem to be off to a great start.

Lewis Black summed it up last night on Larry Wilmore. When asked how he felt he said (I’m paraphrasing) Someone hold a sword, I’ll run at it.”

Take away the tics and the condescension and the rich-white-guy sneering, and Trump simply vanishes. That’s all he is, a humorless collection of affectations surrounding an ego as big as all outdoors.

There is no there there.

If the short-fingered vulgarian weren’t devoid of self-awareness, he would consciously try to tone down the more rococo aspects of his personality, the way most politicians learn to do. The tension between what a politician is allowed to say or do and what she wants to say or do is where the comedy comes from.

But The Donald is devoid of self-awareness, and that’s the problem. He says stupid things and so is unintentionally funny: point a camera at him and wait five minutes, you’ll find a laugh. Tweak his posturings and he erupts in disproportionate fury. That is, as I keep saying, good fun, but that’s the only reaction any comedian can possibly get. It’s a reliable laugh, but it’s not enough. After a week or so of Trump’s candidacy, the loudest sound coming from the writers’ rooms of late-night comedy shows will be screams of frustration.

I hope I’m wrong.
