Centralia, Pennsylvania

On Sunday, we drove up to Centralia, PA -- a ghost town that's been consumed by an underground coal mine fire ignited in 1962. I'll be discussing my road trip in more detail on this week's Bob & Elvis Show. Meanwhile, here's The Town That Was, a documentary by Chris Perkel and Georgie Roland. While you're watching this, ask yourself: is there any such thing as "clean coal?"

Two postscripts. John Lokitis finally abandoned his home and left Centralia back in February. And, ironically, the ridge above the town is now lined with dozens of wind turbines, like silent counterpoints to our fossil fuel past (and present).
